Hailee Steinfeld didn't need an elite acting school to win over the Coen brothers. At 2010, she auditioned for True Grit and outshone thousands of hopefuls at just thirteen years old. That girl from Thousand Oaks shared the screen with Jeff Bridges without a single tremor.
Her Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress came before she could drive a car. But early success is often a trap in California. Many names get lost in the transition from childhood to adulthood because studios don't know where to place someone who acts like a seasoned veteran.
The risk was obvious.
At 2013, she decided she didn't want to be just another face in period dramas. She appeared in Ender's Game and in a version of Romeo and Juliet that quietly came and went in theaters. It was a searching phase, with independent film and big-budget science fiction productions competing for her schedule.
But in 2015, the script changed completely. Steinfeld signed a record deal with Republic Records after proving she could sing in the sequel to Pitch Perfect. It wasn't a young star's whim. Her first single sold millions of copies and forced her to juggle tours with late-night shoots.
In 2016, The Edge of Seventeen arrived. It was the project that proved she could carry a film on her shoulders without relying on special effects or ensemble casts. Critics praised her ability to portray teenage anguish without falling into the clichés of daytime soap operas.
The industry took notice.
Two years later, Steinfeld fully committed to franchise cinema. In 2018, she starred in Bumblebee, a prequel to the robot saga that depended entirely on her interaction with a computer-generated character. That same year, she lent her voice to Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the film went on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
And the gamble paid off.
Steinfeld quickly understood that control of her career meant getting a seat in the production offices. In 2019, she got involved as an executive producer on Dickinson for Apple TV+. Playing poet Emily Dickinson over three seasons allowed her to explore a sharp, modern tone that moved away from traditional biopics.
In 2021, the Marvel Universe came calling to take over Jeremy Renner's arc. Her role as Kate Bishop in the series Hawkeye was designed to secure the generational handoff on the Disney+ platform. Filming in New York required intense physical training, which Steinfeld balanced with recording sessions for her second EP.
But her most profitable work does not always happen in front of the camera. In 2021, she also voiced Vi in Arcane, the series based on the video game League of Legends. The Netflix production became a global phenomenon and secured a second season, which was set to premiere in November 2024.
In 2023, she reprised her role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The film grossed more than 690 million dollars at the global box office and solidified its place in big-budget animated cinema. Steinfeld's contracts now include exclusivity clauses that limit her appearances in projects from direct competitors.
In 2024, production on the third installment of the animated Spider-Man saga still had no confirmed release date on Sony Pictures' official calendar, due to delays in rendering and post-production.
