You Only Live Once... Is It Over?

Nadine Franklin is seventeen and feels like an outsider at high school. She's an introverted girl with a difficult temper, and she has barely any friends beyond Krista, a childhood friend who is there for her on the bad days. At home, her relationship with her mother, Mona, is strained, mostly because Mona worries far too much about how the family looks. Her older brother, Darian, is a popular guy who seems to have everything figured out, and Nadine can't find her place in that family or in her own circle. As she tries to get through each day, she feels that nobody understands her and that the future weighs on her more than she wants to admit.

Trivia about The Edge of Seventeen

In 2011, screenwriter Kelly Fremon Craig sent a copy of her script, Besties, to James L. Brooks in the hope that he would produce it. The film marked her directorial debut.

The film was originally scheduled for September 30, 2016, but its release was pushed back to November 18. That change affected the release date in U.S. distribution.

It opened in North America with 4.8 million dollars, when 8 million had been expected, and finished seventh at the box office that weekend.

It grossed a total of 18.8 million dollars, of which 14.4 million came from the United States and Canada, against a production budget of 9 million.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 94% approval rating based on 222 reviews, and audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it an average grade of "A−".

To find Hailee Steinfeld, the production read more than a thousand actresses over the course of a year, because it was looking for a performer who could capture the many sides of Nadine.

Several scenes included improvised contributions from the actors, including moments involving a Ferris wheel and a pencil sharpener. Kelly Fremon Craig cut back on rehearsals to keep those spontaneous ideas alive.

Hayden Szeto shot in Vancouver, where he had studied, and the film used Guildford Park Secondary School in Surrey, British Columbia, as a filming location.

Quotes by The Edge of Seventeen

There are two types of people in the world: The people who naturally excel at life. And the people who hope all those people die in a big explosion.
Life's about taking risks. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.
Darian: Life isn't fair sometimes, Nadine, okay? You gotta get over it!
I just had a horrible thought... I’m going to have to spend the rest of my life with myself.
Nick, I like you. I want you to put your mouth on my tits. We can do it in the Petland stockroom.
Don't be awkward. Socialize.
