Synopsis of Cheers

Cheers is an American sitcom that airs on NBC, created by Glen Charles, Les Charles and James Burrows. The action takes place in a bar in Boston, Massachusetts, which gives the series its name. Here, a group of regulars gathers to drink, unwind, socialize and forget their everyday problems. Sam Malone, a former Red Sox pitcher, owns the bar and serves as its head bartender, as well as being a notorious womanizer. Opposite him is Diane Chambers, an intellectual waitress who represents class and sophistication, while Sam embodies the everyman. Ted Danson and Shelley Long star in the cast, and the clash between their two characters drives the comedy.

Trivia about Cheers

The Bull & Finch pub in Boston, which served as the model for the bar, was chosen from a phone book. Its owner charged one dollar for taking the exterior and interior photos.

In its first season, the show ranked 74 out of 77 programs in the ratings, despite the critical acclaim it received from the very beginning.

Cheers won 28 Emmy Awards over the course of its history, out of a total of 117 nominations.

The series finale was watched by about 93 million viewers, nearly 40% of the American population at the time.

The producers turned down two songs from their writers before settling on the theme song, "Where Everybody Knows Your Name."

The character of Cliff Clavin was created for John Ratzenberger, who had auditioned for the role of Norm Peterson, which ultimately went to George Wendt.

The cast of Cheers reunited at the 75th Emmy Awards, held in January 2024, more than three decades after the series ended.

Cheers spawned two spin-offs, The Tortellis and Frasier; the second premiered in 1993 and ran until 2004.
