Phoenix Suitcase and California Asphalt

Haley Lu Richardson landed in Los Angeles in 2011 at sixteen, with rigorous training as a competitive dancer. She wasn't looking for the spotlight of red carpets; her original plan was to make a living on musical theater stages. But a lucky break at auditions changed her career trajectory within just a few months.

Her mother went with her on that first trip from Arizona. At first she only landed supporting roles in teen TV series, day jobs that taught her how a real film set works. In 2013 she took part in Shake It Up and shortly after in Ravenswood, although none of those productions hinted at the dramatic weight she had in reserve.

And the industry ended up buying her naturalness.

In 2016 she reached her first real turning point with The Edge of Seventeen. She shared the screen with Hailee Steinfeld and achieved something very hard to pull off in teen movies: keeping her composure opposite far more theatrical characters. That restraint became her signature before she turned twenty.

Refuge in Art-House Cinema

Kogonada, a director obsessed with architecture and silence, handed her the script for Columbus in 2017. It was a risky move for an actress who was just starting to make noise in Hollywood studios. The film was shot in Indiana, and she played Casey, a young woman caught between her dreams and caring for her mother.

International critics took notice of her ability to hold long, static shots without blinking. That performance earned her a nomination at the Gotham Awards and put her on the radar of directors looking for more than just a pretty face. But she didn't want to get stuck in the low-budget indie circuit.

She alternated intimate projects with commercial dramas such as Five Feet Apart in 2019. In this film about cystic fibrosis, she worked alongside Cole Sprouse and proved she could draw young audiences to movie theaters. The film grossed more than $90 million worldwide on a very tight budget.

But her best work came with Unpregnant in 2020.

In this road movie about abortion rights, she blended sharp comedy with extreme vulnerability. The script required her to move from laughter to tears within a single sequence, and she did it without slipping into cheap melodrama. Her name soon started coming up for bigger projects on streaming platforms.

Portia's Closet and Global Success

In 2022 she joined the cast of the second season of The White Lotus and shot in Sicily. She played Portia, the personal assistant to a depressed millionaire, and her wardrobe went viral on social media. Many viewers hated her character for her erratic choices and chaotic outfits, but she defended every stitch of that lost young woman.

The media exposure was massive. Unlike some of her co-stars, she kept a low profile in the tabloids and focused on her own production company. In 2023, she starred in Love at First Sight for Netflix, a romantic comedy that topped viewing charts for weeks. Her contract included executive producing duties, a step she had been working toward since her early days in California.

Not everything has gone right on her path. In several interviews she has recalled how she was turned down for leading roles in major superhero franchises. But that lack of strings has let her choose riskier scripts instead of signing decade-long exclusive contracts.

She still lives far from the constant noise of industry parties.

Off camera, she devotes much of her time to her crochet brand, Hookers Green. What started as a hobby during downtime in dressing rooms grew into a business selling directly to customers. In 2024, making her handcrafted pieces remains her main creative outlet whenever there are no shoots on the calendar.

The actress wrapped her participation in the music video for the Jonas Brothers' song Wings in 2023. The shoot took place at the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas under the direction of Anthony Mandler. The room where they filmed cost more than 5,000 dollars per night.
