The Broadway Stage Assault

Meghann Fahy didn't need a mass casting call in Los Angeles to understand how the industry works. In 2010, she took the stage at the Booth Theatre to replace Jennifer Damiano in the musical Next to Normal. She was barely twenty years old, with a voice that projected far more than any simple academic training.

Nobody knew who she was yet.

That New York theater debut was the result of a lucky string of auditions searching for someone who could handle eight weekly performances of intense emotional stakes. But theater doesn't always pay Manhattan's bills. So she accepted a role on the soap opera One Life to Live during 2010 and 2012, playing a stalking student. Eighty-one episodes of intensive training in front of the cameras came before her definitive leap into prime-time series.

Before breaking into national television, she had small roles in Gossip Girl and The Good Wife. These were fleeting appearances that barely showed her dramatic range. During those years of failed auditions and waiting in New York coffee shops, she learned that rejection is the common currency of this profession.

Sutton Brady's Uniform

In 2017, Freeform premiered The Bold Type, and Fahy's life shifted gears. The character of Sutton Brady seemed made for her, since it blended real vulnerability with the ambition of someone from a humble background. The series ran for five seasons and was mostly filmed in Montreal, even though it was set in the offices of a New York fashion magazine.

And that was her best school.

During the show's filming in 2019, she juggled fourteen-hour days with smaller projects such as the TV movie Just Add Romance. She wasn't chasing prestige; she simply wanted to keep a steady work pace. Many actors of her generation would have settled for the paycheck of a teen series, but she used production downtime to seek out roles that moved away from light comedy.

In 2021, she left the cast of The Bold Type feeling that a chapter had come to a close. There were no big celebrations or loud announcements in the trade press. She simply went home and waited for the chance to break free from the image the public had of her as the friendly fashion assistant.

Daphne Sullivan's Mask

Mike White cast her for the second season of The White Lotus in 2022, and the project became a social-commentary phenomenon. Filming moved to Sicily, and Fahy had to play Daphne Sullivan, a wealthy woman who uses passive aggression as a defense mechanism. Her performance of feigned happiness earned her an Emmy Award nomination in 2023.

Daphne was the Trojan horse.

Critics paid particular attention to a beach scene in which her face shifts expression in just three seconds as she receives devastating news. There was no dialogue and no grand gestures. That ability to convey inner pain without breaking the mask of privilege put her in a different league from her earlier work.

Following her success in Sicily, she took part in the suspense production The Perfect Couple, filmed in 2024 for Netflix. In this miniseries, she shared the screen with Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, playing Merritt Monaco. The production budget exceeded fifty million dollars, and it was shot entirely on the coast of Massachusetts over the summer.

In 2023, the Television Academy named her among the nominees for Best Supporting Actress for her work on HBO.
