The Twelve-Year-Old Deception

Sasha Pieterse was twelve years old when she convinced the producers of Pretty Little Liars that she could play a manipulative, cruel high school queen. She lied about her age in the early stages of casting because the script demanded a maturity she already projected naturally. She landed the role of Alison DiLaurentis in 2009 and became the narrative engine of a television phenomenon that ran for seven seasons.

The deception worked perfectly.

She was born in Johannesburg in 1996 but grew up in Las Vegas surrounded by stages. Her parents were professional acrobatic dancers, and that showbiz heritage allowed her to make her debut in the comedy Family Affair in 2002, at just six years old. She didn't have a conventional childhood, because the film set soon replaced the schoolyard.

Precocity marked every step of her technical training. Before turning fifteen, she had already logged plenty of hours on high-profile series such as House and CSI: Miami. But it was the mystery of Rosewood that anchored her in the collective memory of a global generation.

Her Move to Independent Film

While television was typecasting her as a teen drama star, Paul Thomas Anderson saw a different energy in her. In 2014 he cast her in Inherent Vice, where she shared scenes with Joaquin Phoenix. It was a risky move that pulled her away from the look of the teen magazines of the era.

Critics praised her ability to sustain the film's psychedelic tone without being overshadowed by veteran actors. But the Hollywood industry is rigid about physical image, and Pieterse began experiencing severe metabolic changes during the filming of her main series. She gained nearly thirty kilos in just two years due to an undiagnosed health problem.

The public's cruelty didn't slow down her career.

She suffered from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Doctors took a long time to identify the cause of her weight gain, and social media harassment was constant while she tried to understand what was happening to her body. In 2017 she decided to join the competition Dancing with the Stars to raise awareness of her medical condition and regain control of her own public narrative.

Independent Productions and Maturity

Her return to the universe that made her famous came in 2019 with the premiere of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. The series lasted only one season on air, but it served to definitively bid farewell to her best-known character. She then began looking for roles in smaller productions and genre films that would let her explore other registers.

In 2024, she starred in the psychological thriller The Image of You, playing twin sisters Anna and Zoe. It was a role that gave her the double acting challenge of embodying opposite personalities under the direction of Jeff Celentano. The film is based on the novel by Adele Parks and focuses on family betrayal and erotic suspense.

Balance is the priority.

Her filmography also includes family-friendly titles such as Ivy + Bean in 2022. However, Pieterse now prefers short shoots that don't tie her to long-term contracts like the ones she signed during her time at ABC Family. In 2020, she gave birth to her son Hendrix, and her professional focus shifted toward work-life balance and producing her own content.

For the production of The Image of You, the budget was adjusted so that most scenes were shot in enclosed locations over less than a month of intensive work.
