Nesta Cooper was born in Mississauga in 1993, but her future was truly decided at age seven, when her family moved to Vancouver. That Canadian city became her base of operations and the place where she began to understand how the entertainment industry worked from the inside. Her first steps were anything but glamorous, as they consisted of going through endless auditions for tiny roles in series such as The Haunting Hour.
In 2016, her luck changed dramatically thanks to independent film. She appeared in The Edge of Seventeen as Kristi and shared scenes with Hailee Steinfeld in a story that avoided the usual clichés of high school dramas. That film grossed more than $18 million and got her noticed by casting directors in Los Angeles for her ability to convey effortless naturalness.
And then the call from science fiction came.
That same year, she joined the cast of Travelers to play Carly Shannon. The series imagined a scenario in which travelers from the future occupy the bodies of people in the present to prevent the collapse of humanity. Cooper had to learn combat choreography and weapons handling, since her character was the group's tactical specialist. The show ran for three seasons and ended in 2018 after moving from the Showcase channel to Netflix.
In 2019, she signed the most important contract of her career up to that point. Apple TV+ cast her in See, one of the most ambitious bets in television at the time. She played Haniwa, one of the twins who regain their sense of sight in a world plunged into total darkness. Filming took place in remote landscapes of British Columbia, and she worked side by side with Jason Momoa for three straight years.
But television wasn't her only refuge during that period of professional growth. By 2017, she had already starred in Reality High for the streaming market, and in 2021 she appeared in Bliss alongside Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek. Cooper always preferred to alternate genre projects with denser psychological dramas, so the industry wouldn't pigeonhole her into a single physical type.
The physical demands on the Vancouver shoots were extreme.
In 2023, she shot the horror film Squealer, where she explored a much darker and more visceral side. It was a small project compared with Apple's big productions, but it helped her stay grounded in pure genre cinema. For her, the size of the budget has never been the deciding factor when it comes to accepting a script.
In 2024, she starred as Kemba, directed by Kelley Kali. The film is based on the real life of Kemba Smith (a college student who ended up in prison because of the federal drug laws of the 1990s). Cooper had to take on a role with far greater political and social weight than anything she had done before. The film premiered at the Virginia festival and was praised for the sobriety with which it tackled such a thorny subject.
And the gamble paid off.
The actress has managed her time well, without overexposing herself on screen or engaging aggressively with the celebrity circuit. Her interests outside the set include photography and quiet activism, but her priority remains acting in its purest form. Her career has been built block by block, without relying on passing trends or the virality of social media.
In 2025, her name remained tied to productions that seek stories with a strong emotional core. The production of Kemba wrapped on a tight budget, with distribution focused on independent film circuits in the United States.
