Rukiya Bernard didn't need permission to break into Toronto's industry. She was born in 1983, and her parents, of Jamaican and Kenyan descent, steered her toward the arts from childhood. She studied ballet, piano and karate before deciding that acting was her true calling. At Ryerson University she refined a technique that would help her survive the most grueling casting processes in North America.
Her first real break came with a small role in the blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow in 2004. It was a brief brush with Hollywood's unlimited budgets that didn't go to her head. She preferred the grit of independent projects and television series with complex characters.
Nobody handed her anything.
In 2007, she appeared in The Most Beautiful Thing and began to realize that her look fit stories that required a specific physicality. But she didn't get stuck in the role of the athlete or action woman. She worked steadily in local productions until the American market took notice of her ability to carry supporting storylines with real dramatic weight.
In 2016, she stepped into the role of Doc in the series Van Helsing. This character demanded a physical and mental transformation that moved her away from the flat roles that television often offers Black actresses. She played a forensic expert turned vampire who regains her humanity, an arc that lasted several seasons and earned her a worldwide fan base.
Doc was her ticket to creative freedom.
While filming this Syfy series, she learned how the special effects and prosthetic makeup machinery worked. But her ambition went beyond waiting for the phone to ring with a casting offer. So she started writing and producing her own projects to control the story of her career.
She appeared in Yellowjackets in 2021, playing the adult version of Simone. In this project she proved she could share the screen with top-tier names without losing her edge. She did it under considerable media pressure due to the show's success on streaming platforms.
In 2021, she founded her own production company and began directing films for thematic television channels. She knows that film is a business of numbers and logistics. She directed films such as The BFF Club with a technical efficiency that surprised veterans on set. She isn't chasing critical acclaim so much as a connection with an audience that consumes fast-paced entertainment.
The industry is a game of endurance.
Before shooting each scene, she reviews production costs because she understands that art without profitability is fleeting. In 2023, she joined the cast of Family Law, playing a lawyer with a fragmented personal life. Her contract for that production included specific scheduling clauses to help her balance family life.
The budget for the final season of this series was adjusted to the standards of low-budget Canadian television in 2024. Rukiya Bernard wrapped filming days in Vancouver with 14 hours a day spent between the set and the production office. Filming finished with a savings of 5% over the originally planned budget.
