Agam Darshi

The script nobody was writing

Agam Darshi was born in Birmingham, but her career took shape in the cold of Canada. Before turning twenty, she already knew the roles offered to her did not always match the ones she wanted to play. She started in Canadian television with brief appearances in series such as Renegadepress.com during 2004.

The industry can be shortsighted.

She spent years playing a string of supporting characters in sci-fi and horror productions. In 2009, she joined the cast of Sanctuary as Kate Freelander. She appeared in a total of 37 episodes, giving her the financial stability to start looking beyond the film set. But the scripts she received still relied on stereotypes that didn't reflect her reality as a woman from the South Asian diaspora.

Then she decided to take charge.

She founded the Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival because she needed a space where film was not filtered through the dominant white gaze of North America. She wasn't looking for a pat on the back. She wanted a real exhibition structure for stories that fell outside the commercial circuits of British Columbia.

Regina and the Netflix Chill

In 2022, she released her feature directorial and screenwriting debut, Donkeyhead. The film was shot entirely in Regina, Saskatchewan, where temperatures dropped below 20 degrees below zero during night shoots. Darshi not only directed the project but also starred in it, after years of producers turning her down because they didn't think her vision was commercially viable.

The gamble paid off.

Ava DuVernay acquired the U.S. distribution rights through her ARRAY platform, and the film landed on Netflix that same year. The story of a daughter caring for her dying father avoided the usual tearjerker drama, focusing instead on a cynical, rough narrative. At the Leo Awards in 2022, the film took home three major awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay.

During 2024, she worked on the set of Sight, playing the wife of a renowned eye surgeon. It is a supporting role in a biographical production that departs from her more experimental work in Canadian independent film. Survival in the industry demands balancing personal projects with work for major studios.

Production on Donkeyhead was completed on a shooting schedule of just twenty-two days.
