Jesse Moss doesn't seek absolute truth, because he knows there is always a necessary lie in the editing room. His films are built on pure observation and on the patience of waiting for the subject to forget the camera.
In 2003 he premiered Speedo. It was his first breakthrough, portraying a demolition derby driver who lived on the edge of sanity and asphalt. Before that, he worked as a research assistant for veteran journalist Seymour Hersh, and that school of hard-hitting, in-the-trenches journalism never fully left him.
But his gaze is not that of a reporter.
Moss prefers to stay out of the spotlight. In 2008, with Full Battle Rattle, he entered a military training town in the California desert, and there he came to understand that simulation is the best way to understand war.
Making The Overnighters in 2014 required him to live in Williston, a North Dakota town overwhelmed by the fracking boom. He shot there alone for months, carrying the sound equipment and camera himself so as not to break the intimacy of the workers who slept on the floor of a church.
And the result was a Greek tragedy shot on digital.
The film won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize that year. It turned a local story about charity and rejection into a massive international run. Critics praised its ability to find moral dilemmas where others saw only poverty.
In 2019 he directed the documentary series The Family for Netflix. The series unpacked the influence of a secret Christian organization on Washington politics through a mix of interviews and dramatic reenactments. It was a commissioned project that required a much more rigid narrative structure than is typical in his body of work.
In 2020, Boys State premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Apple TV+ paid 12 million dollars for the distribution rights to the documentary, a figure that broke the price ceilings of the independent market at the time.
The film follows a thousand teenagers from Texas who try to build a government from scratch.
The structure was repeated in 2024 with the release of Girls State. This time Moss and his co-director Amanda McBaine focused on the contradictions of the judicial system and female power in a conservative environment. The shoot lasted barely a week but generated more than 500 hours of raw footage that took months to organize.
Because Moss's work depends entirely on the editing room. So his process often extends well beyond the physical production phase, as he searches for the dramatic arc among thousands of hours of mundane conversations.
The final budget for this latest production exceeded the genre's usual limits due to the deployment of multiple simultaneous camera units and a thirty-person sound crew.
