Garwin Sanford never needed to headline a poster to carry a scene.
His face is immediately associated with the productions filmed in Vancouver during the cable TV boom. But his entry into the industry was more low-key than his later credits suggest. He studied at the University of Victoria and soon realized that his profile fit into the local industry that served as an affordable studio backlot for California productions.
In 1989, he appeared in The Fly II, playing a character named Reverdy.
It was a supporting role in a sequel that didn't impress critics at the time. But it helped casting directors in British Columbia take note of his name. Sanford had the calm presence producers looked for in characters with moral authority or advanced scientific knowledge.
Most fans of Stargate SG-1 know him as Narim. He first appeared in 1998, and his chemistry with the character of Samantha Carter earned him a return over several seasons. He was not the typical action hero. He brought an intellectual fragility that contrasted with the military tone of the original series.
Then something unusual happened for a big franchise.
Years after his first character disappeared from the plot, the show's producers called him back. In 2004, he was cast as Simon Wallace in Stargate Atlantis. They made no attempt to hide that it was the same actor. They simply trusted that his presence would add emotional weight to the protagonist's past on Earth.
Sanford appeared in three different series from the Stargate universe, counting his brief appearance in Stargate Universe during 2010.
Many actors of his generation lost their footing when digital cameras replaced film at the start of the century. Sanford avoided that fate by diversifying his interests beyond the film set. For decades, he balanced his work in front of the camera with sculpture and painting in his studio on Vancouver Island.
This artistic side explains his approach to scripts.
In 2012, he worked on The Tall Man alongside Jessica Biel under director Pascal Laugier. It was a complex shoot in cold locations where Sanford proved he could step away from the polish of more conventional television sci-fi. His career became a string of brief but solid appearances in shows such as Supernatural and Arrow.
In 2022, he appeared in the series The Midnight Club for Netflix.
He played William in two episodes of the first season. It is a role that reflects his move toward mentor or father-figure parts in contemporary fantasy stories. His filmography includes more than one hundred credited titles across film and television since he made his professional debut in the late 1980s.
In 2023, he was seen in the tenth season of When Calls the Heart, reprising his role as William Thatcher. Filming took place on the outskirts of Langley, on a set that recreates an early 20th-century town. The production contract included standard availability clauses for additional shoots during that same summer.
