Synopsis of Airwolf

Stringfellow Hawke, played by Jan-Michael Vincent, was one of the test pilots of the Airwolf, a supersonic military helicopter with stealth capabilities and a formidable arsenal. Hawke lives apart from the world and has almost no contact with his former job. The Firm, a secret branch of the CIA, assigns him to recover the aircraft, which its creator, Dr. Charles Henry Moffet, has taken to the enemy government of Libya. Hawke manages to locate the helicopter but doesn't return it to the United States. Set in the 80s, the series was created by Donald P. Bellisario and aired on CBS and USA Network.

Trivia about Airwolf

Donald P. Bellisario began developing the idea in an episode of Magnum, P.I. titled "Two Birds of a Feather" (1983), starring William Lucking.

The series premiered on CBS just after Super Bowl XVIII, when the pilot episode was already finished but had yet to air.

The two pilot episodes were later edited together into a cinematic-style home video release titled Airwolf: The Movie.

To boost ratings, the studio wanted to add a regular female lead and move away from dark international espionage stories. The changes didn't work.

The loss of the original production crew, the drop in ratings and rising costs led CBS to sell the series to the newly launched USA Cable Network.

The fourth season was shot in Vancouver, Canada, with a budget less than a third of what the series had at CBS.

Jan-Michael Vincent's addiction to alcohol and drugs caused constant problems during the filming of the series, according to the IMDb profile for "Airwolf" (1984-1986).

"Airwolf" was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards and won one, although the IMDb profile I checked doesn't specify in the results shown which category it won.
