John Ireland looked like a man who had slept little and fought a lot. He was born in Vancouver in 1914 and raised on the streets of New York. Before becoming an actor, he made a living as a professional swimmer in water shows, and that physical toughness helped him endure the knocks of an industry that never fully embraced him.
His film debut came in 1945 with A Walk in the Sun. He had a dry screen presence that fit perfectly into film noir and postwar westerns. But his big break came with All the King's Men in 1949. His performance as Jack Burden earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
That was the peak of his career in the major studio system.
During the filming of Red River in 1948, he had serious problems with Howard Hawks. The director cut his screen time and entire lines of dialogue because Ireland was having an affair with Joanne Dru. Hawks was also interested in her. In the end, Ireland and Dru married in 1949 in a union that lasted just over five years.
The marriage ended in 1954 after a series of public scandals. Ireland was not an easy man to handle for the press departments of the time. His career began to drift toward the margins of Hollywood, and leading roles in major productions faded away.
So he decided that if he wasn't offered good roles, he would create them himself.
In 1953 he co-directed Hannah Lee and soon after took the helm of The Fast and the Furious for Roger Corman's production company. He was one of the first named stars to accept bare-bones budgets in exchange for creative control. He cared less about prestige than about continuing to work his own way.
In 60 he moved to Europe to work in spaghetti westerns and Italian horror films. He appeared in Spartacus in 1960, but his role was overshadowed by the rest of the cast. European producers sought him out to lend an air of American prestige to low-budget films shot in Almería or Rome.
Television became his bread and butter for decades.
He appeared in episodes of Bonanza, The Virginian, and Route 66. His deep voice and weary gaze allowed him to play nuanced villains or family fathers with a dark past. In 1991 he filmed his final appearance on Santa Barbara, playing a character named Skyler Gates.
He died on March 21, 1992 in Santa Barbara from leukemia. He was 78 years old at the time of his death. His remains were cremated and the ashes given to his family without any public ceremony.
