Michele Scarabelli had no intention of becoming an actress when she was studying Psychology at McGill University. That decision to trade lecture halls for the stages of Montreal in the late 1970s set the course for a career that consistently avoided the spotlight of big-budget blockbusters in favor of the reliable work of a prestige supporting actor. Her professional debut came in 1980 with a small role in the film The Lucky Star.
And the gamble paid off.
She soon realized that her look and her ability to stay calm on camera fit the standards of American television. In 1984, she climbed into the helicopter of Airwolf to play Jo Santini. It was her first real contact with the Los Angeles industry and pulled her away for good from the Canadian theater circuit where she had trained.
But her name became etched in the memory of science fiction fans thanks to Alien Nation. She played Susan Francisco throughout the original series and the five TV movies filmed between 1994 and 1997. The prosthetic makeup for the aliens required more than twelve hours of work before filming even began.
She never sought mass fame, but she built a loyal following that still analyzes her performances on specialist forums today. That connection to the fantasy genre was strengthened in 1991 when she joined Star Trek: The Next Generation. She played Jenna D'Sora, the officer who had a romantic relationship with the android Data in the episode In Theory.
Shooting that episode was a technical challenge, given the precision the camera movements required on the Enterprise's bridge.
Many actors of her generation faded into obscurity after the big franchises of the 1990s ended. Scarabelli chose steady, hardworking jobs instead. She appeared in dozens of suspense telefilms and family dramas for channels like Hallmark and Lifetime. In 2001, she worked on the series Seven Days, and a year later she appeared in The Journeyman Project 3, a video game that used real actors for its cinematic sequences.
In 2023, she appeared in the television adaptation of The Last of Us for HBO. She played Connie in the sixth episode of the first season. It was a brief appearance that helped anchor the story in the everyday normality of a human settlement amid the chaos. Her filmography includes more than one hundred titles across film, television and animated voice work.
The craft remains intact.
Unlike other figures of her era, Scarabelli never tried to produce her own projects or move into cinematography. She stayed true to pure, hardcore acting. In 1995, she voiced various celebrities in the animated series Iron Man, and that side of her work allowed her to stay consistently employed without relying solely on her physical image. The syndication deal for her series from the 1980s still gives her financial stability today, something many leads from that decade lost through bad investments. Her scenes for The Last of Us were shot in locations in Alberta, Canada, in temperatures that dropped below minus ten degrees Celsius.
