In 2013, Jonah Hill accepted the Screen Actors Guild minimum wage to shoot under Martin Scorsese. He earned 60,000 dollars gross for seven months of work while Leonardo DiCaprio pocketed ten million for the same film. He wanted to be on that set at any cost.
The move looked like financial suicide for a guy who had been filling theaters across half the planet. But Hill was fed up with Los Angeles executives seeing him only as the lovable chubby guy from teen comedies. He needed someone to take him seriously.
And the gamble paid off.
The son of a tour accountant for Guns N' Roses, he grew up in the affluent neighborhoods of Los Angeles writing short plays that he staged in New York bars. Dustin Hoffman, whose children were his schoolmates and friends, saw something in him and got him an audition for I Heart Huckabees in 2004. That small debut opened the door to Judd Apatow's studio machine.
His appearance as a bewildered client in The 40-Year-Old Virgin lasted only a few minutes. But it was enough for Apatow to find him a spot in Knocked Up and hand him the keys to the project that defined his early career: Superbad in 2007. The comedy cost 20 million dollars and grossed more than 170 million worldwide.
The role of Seth brought him instant fame. It also brought a fierce typecasting that was extremely hard to escape. For years, press conferences were limited to awkward questions about his weight, gross-out jokes and anecdotes about fictional drunken escapades.
In 2011, Bennett Miller decided to cast him as Peter Brand in Moneyball. Brad Pitt backed the decision, and Hill responded with precise, controlled restraint, free of any comedic flourish, turning baseball spreadsheets into pure dramatic tension.
No one at the Burbank studios expected that first Oscar nomination.
Two years later, the breakthrough came with The Wolf of Wall Street. To play Donnie Azoff, he wore a ridiculous set of false teeth, swallowed live fish on camera and ended up in the hospital with bronchitis after snorting endless lines of vitamin D powder. He earned his second Academy Award nomination and the respect of veteran directors.
At the same time, he secured his financial independence. With 21 Jump Street in 2012 and its sequel in 2014, he not only shared the screen with Channing Tatum, but also worked as a screenwriter and executive producer. The franchise surpassed 530 million dollars at the global box office and gave him the muscle to finance projects outside studio formulas.
Because Hill always wanted to direct. Before stepping behind the monitor, he spent years studying directors like Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Gus Van Sant while playing supporting roles.
In 2018, he wrote and directed his first narrative feature, Mid90s, produced by the independent studio A24. He shot on 16mm film in a 4:3 aspect ratio to avoid complacent nostalgia and capture the raw reality of street skating in California.
The sudden death of his brother Jordan Feldstein in 2017 changed his view of the industry. So in 2022, he premiered Stutz on Netflix, a spare documentary centered on his relationship with psychiatrist Phil Stutz. In it, he opened up about his panic attacks and publicly announced that he would stop doing promotional tours and press junkets to protect his mental health.
Distance from the spotlight did not slow down his production deals.
In 2023, he co-wrote the social satire You People with Kenya Barris, sharing the lead with Eddie Murphy. Two years later, he completed production on Outcome, a black comedy starring Keanu Reeves and Cameron Diaz.
For the shoot of Outcome in 2024, Apple TV allocated a budget of 35 million dollars, closing the project with a final cut of 84 minutes for its April 2026 premiere.
