In 2007 a seventeen-year-old kid with no prior experience walked into a casting office in Los Angeles and changed the course of American teen comedy. Christopher Mintz-Plasse didn't even have professional studio photos. He took one with a friend's camera, and that image ended up in the hands of the producers of Superbad.
His mother had to be present on set during filming because he was a minor. The script for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg required that his character, Fogell, interact with adult actors in situations involving alcohol. Mintz-Plasse earned just 8,000 dollars for that first job, which took him from complete obscurity.
And the gamble paid off.
McLovin's character gave him a level of fame that few young actors handle well. But he chose to embrace the absurdity of that fake Hawaii ID. The ID card image was printed on millions of T-shirts and mugs throughout the 2000s. It was a phenomenon that threatened to pigeonhole him forever in the role of the geeky sidekick.
In 2010, he decided he didn't want to be just the comic relief at high school parties. He signed on for Kick-Ass to play Red Mist. The role demanded that he be both a pathetic and a cruel villain. He reprised the character in the 2013 sequel as Red Mist, exploring a much darker and more violent side.
Before shooting Fright Night in 2011, he had to sit through several hours of makeup sessions. He played Ed, a young man who ends up turned into a vampire in the remake directed by Craig Gillespie. It was his first real experience with mainstream horror and heavy latex prosthetics.
He was looking to move away from the shadow of his debut.
In 2014 he appeared in Neighbors alongside Zac Efron and Seth Rogen. He played one of the members of the college fraternity. The role was small, but it kept him within the orbit of the new Hollywood comedy produced by Judd Apatow.
Voicing King Gristle in the Trolls franchise starting in 2016 gave him a different kind of stability. This side of his career let him work in a studio environment without the constant pressure of public image. In 2023, he returned to the character for the third installment of the animated saga, titled Trolls Band Together.
But acting isn't his only constant pursuit. Christopher Mintz-Plasse devotes much of his time to music. He plays bass in the band MainMan and was previously a member of the band Young Stan. Music is his real refuge away from the film industry.
In 2020 he appeared in Promising Young Woman in a brief but sinister role. Emerald Fennell cast him as one of those men who think they're good but hide toxic behavior. The contrast between his youthful face and the amorality of the character proved a very effective casting choice for the film's storyline.
The industry keeps calling him for very specific roles.
In 2022 he took part in the film Honor Society for Paramount Plus. His career has settled into a mix of big-budget voice work and independent projects. The original contract for Superbad remains the most important document in his personal archive, given what it meant for his bank account in 2007.
