Anna Kendrick arrived on Broadway before she was old enough to drive. In 1998 she earned a Tony nomination for the musical High Society at just twelve years old, and that early precocity shaped the way she understood the industry. She wasn't after fame but steady work.
Her move into film came in 2003 with Camp, but mass recognition came through a franchise she herself has described as a financial necessity. In 2008, she accepted the role of Jessica Stanley in Twilight.
That supporting role allowed her to fund her forays into independent film while the fan phenomenon exploded around her. But the real shift in pace happened in 2009.
That year, she shared the screen with George Clooney in Up in the Air, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences responded with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
That was the exact moment she stopped being the protagonist's friend and started leading her own projects.
Music was always her safety net. In 2012, she starred in Pitch Perfect, and what looked like a minor college comedy ended up grossing 115 million dollars worldwide. The song Cups reached triple platinum in the United States when nobody saw it coming.
And the gamble paid off.
She agreed to shoot Into the Woods in 2014 for Disney because it let her sing again in a controlled setting. But Kendrick avoided being typecast in pure musicals and sought stories with more edge. In 2018 she shot A Simple Favor alongside Blake Lively under the direction of Paul Feig.
That film confirmed that her verbal quickness fit perfectly with acidic suspense. But after years in front of the camera, the actress began to seek full control of the storytelling.
In 2016, she published her essay collection Scrappy Little Nobody, in which she detailed her distrust of fame's stability. That mindset led her to produce the series Love Life in 2020 for HBO Max.
But she took the decisive step in 2023.
At the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, she presented Woman of the Hour. For this film, she not only starred but also directed for the first time in her film career.
The film tells the true story of a serial killer who took part in a TV game show in the 1970s. Kendrick shot the project in 2022 on a tight budget, with a raw vision that broke away from her previous work.
Netflix acquired the distribution rights to Woman of the Hour for close to 11 million dollars after its run through the fall festivals.
