Adam Devine

The Concrete Truck and the Comedy

Adam Devine nearly died at age eleven. A **twenty-two-ton** concrete truck ran him over while he was crossing the street in his hometown. The accident shattered his legs and left him in a coma for several days.

He went through **twenty-seven reconstructive surgeries** during his childhood. During rehabilitation, he was bullied at school for his scars and the way he walked. But he discovered that if he told jokes, the other kids stopped laughing at him and started laughing with him.

Humor was his defense mechanism against chronic pain.

After studying at Orange Coast College, he decided to move to Los Angeles. There he met his future partners and founded the comedy group Mail Order Comedy. They started posting sketches online when YouTube was still a wide-open frontier.

The Success of Ordinary Guys

In 2011, Comedy Central bought his idea for a TV series. Workaholics followed three friends who worked at a call center and refused to grow up. The show ran for **seven full seasons**.

Devine played an exaggerated version of himself. His style relied on physical energy and an unusual talent for comedic screaming.

He wasn't going for elegance.

In 2012 he got his first big break in film with Pitch Perfect. He played Bumper Allen, the boastful antagonist of an a cappella group. The film grossed over **one hundred fifteen million** dollars worldwide.

And the gamble paid off.

That role opened the doors of mainstream television for him. In 2013 he joined the cast of Modern Family to play Andy. His character had a romantic relationship with Haley Dunphy that lasted until 2016.

His mature era on HBO

HBO signed him in 2019 to join The Righteous Gemstones. In this series he plays Kelvin Gemstone, the youngest son of a dynasty of millionaire televangelists. He shares scenes with actors of the caliber of John Goodman.

His voice work in animation is also extensive. He voiced Sam-I-Am in the Netflix series Green Eggs and Ham between 2019 and 2022. But he never abandoned live-action projects under his own production label.

In 2022 he starred in Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin. This **six-episode** series was filmed entirely in Germany to explore the life of his best-known character in Europe. Netflix released his film The Out-Laws with Pierce Brosnan in 2023.

In 2024 his first son was born from his marriage to actress Chloe Bridges. He still runs his own production company, Why Hungry, from his office in Los Angeles.
