Ben Whittaker is a 70-year-old widower who has retired after a long career as an executive. Robert De Niro plays this character in a comedy directed by Nancy Meyers. To fill his days, Ben travels, learns languages, practices tai chi and goes for walks, but every time he returns home he feels that something is still missing. Bored with life without work, he decides to apply for a newly created position: senior intern at About the Fit, a fast-growing fashion e-commerce company in Brooklyn. The company's founder, a busy young woman, is not thrilled about hiring a man his age, and Ben will have to earn his place among people who could be his granddaughters.

The film was originally planned at Paramount Pictures, with Tina Fey and Michael Caine as the leads, before moving to Warner Bros.

Reese Witherspoon took over the lead role after Tina Fey exited, but left the project on January 15, 2014 due to scheduling conflicts.

critic Manohla Dargis of The New York Times wrote that De Niro «dominates the film from the moment he opens his mouth», although she criticized Meyers's screenplay.

Clem Bastow, writing for The Guardian, suggested that the film's harsh reviews came mostly from men, who make up the vast majority of film critics.

Quentin Tarantino lamented that the film was not considered for the Oscars, even though, in his view, De Niro delivered one of the best performances of the year.

«The Intern» grossed approximately $194.8 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $35 million, with $75.8 million coming from the United States and Canada.

Principal photography began on June 23, 2014 in Brooklyn and wrapped on September 29 of the same year; a significant portion of the scenes were filmed in Hunts Point, in the Bronx.
