Linda Lavin was born in Portland in the fall of 1937. She grew up in a family where music was at the center of everything, since her mother was an opera singer. She studied at William & Mary University and soon realized that New York was the only possible destination for someone with her voice.
New York doesn't give anything away.
She began in musical theater in the early 1960s. She took part in productions such as A Family Affair in 1962, and shortly after earned a Tony nomination for Last of the Red Hot Lovers in 1970. But the real change of pace came away from the Broadway stage.
In 1976, she took the lead role in the series Alice. The show was based on a film by Martin Scorsese, and Lavin had to bring to life a character who fought for financial independence in a Phoenix diner. She won two Golden Globes for this role and stayed on the air for nine seasons in a row.
But television comes at a high price for anyone chasing the prestige of drama. Audiences identified her so strongly with waitress Alice Hyatt that film producers stopped calling her for major roles. So she decided her place was back on the stage.
She returned to Broadway in 1987 with the play Broadway Bound. Playwright Neil Simon wrote the mother role with her specifically in mind. Critics were won over by her performance, and that night she took home the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play.
And then the respect returned.
Throughout the nineties and the first decade of the new century, she specialized in complex, often sharp-tongued characters. In 2001, she worked in the play The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and once again came close to the theater's highest honor. Lavin never chased the fame of magazine covers, but the security of a solid script.
Her film appearances have been more selective. In 2010, she appeared in the film The Back-up Plan, and in 2012 she joined the cast of Wanderlust. The size of the role never mattered to her as long as the director knew what they wanted to shoot.
The industry often overlooks actresses of a certain age, but she managed to find openings in modern television. In 2014, she appeared in The Good Wife playing a relentless court clerk. Her ability to say a lot with just a gesture remained intact.
In 2015, she shot The Intern alongside Robert De Niro under the direction of Nancy Meyers. It was a brief appearance, but one full of the natural ease that only years of experience bring. Because Lavin understands that acting means listening to your scene partner.
The gamble paid off.
Between 2020 and 2022, she was part of the main cast of the comedy B Positive. She played Norma, a resident of a senior living center with a razor-sharp dark sense of humor. Filming for the series stretched across thirty episodes before its final cancellation.
In 2021, she worked on the film Being the Ricardos, where she played Madelyn Pugh, one of the pioneering writers of American television. It was a poetic full circle for someone who helped define the sitcom decades earlier.
In 2024, she finished filming Naked Within, directed by Gabriel Byrd.
