Roy is a father willing to do anything to protect Alton, his eight-year-old son. Together they travel the back roads of West Texas at night while the boy reads comic books in the back seat. Roy drives with the goal of reaching a secret place where they can be safe. The conflict arises when it becomes clear that Alton has extraordinary abilities. From that moment on, the authorities and a group of religious extremists track them relentlessly. Jeff Nichols directs the film, and Michael Shannon plays Roy, alongside Jaeden Lieberher as Alton.

Trivia about Midnight Special

Nichols wanted to make a science fiction movie in the style of the ones he watched as a kid, such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. and Starman.

The idea of fatherhood came from Nichols' relationship with his son, who was one year old when he wrote the screenplay.

According to sources, the film grossed 7 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 18 million.

Filming lasted 40 days in New Orleans and wrapped on March 1, 2014.

Jeff Nichols insisted on keeping the final cut in order to take on the project, and even considered producing it with an independent company, but Warner Bros. accepted the condition despite the relatively modest budget.

Approximately 80 to 90% of the lens flares were created directly during filming, rather than added later with digital effects.

Adam Driver learned that they would be in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" on the same day they began filming "Midnight Special".

The film was shot on celluloid, except for the night scenes inside cars, which were filmed with an Arri Alexa camera.
