A Marine at Art School

Adam Driver doesn't have the look of a conventional movie star. That's his biggest competitive advantage. Before stepping onto a stage in New York, he served in the United States Marine Corps. He enlisted after the September 11 attacks because he felt he had to do something useful with his anger and energy.

But a bicycle accident broke his sternum and sidelined him before he could be deployed to Iraq. It was a hard hit that forced him to recalculate his path. He ended up at Juilliard studying acting with a discipline that intimidated his classmates.

In 2012, the series Girls put him on the map. He played an erratic, magnetic young man who always walked hunched over. He wasn't the leading man the industry expected. But his physical presence was so overwhelming that it was impossible to look away when he was on screen.

The industry quickly understood that Driver wasn't chasing easy fame.

In 2014, he won the Volpi Cup in Venice for his work in Hungry Hearts. It was the first serious sign that this tall guy from San Diego was about to play in the league of major auteurs. And he did it with an intensity reminiscent of the actors of 1970s Hollywood.

The Obsession with Physical Control

To prepare for Silence in 2016, under the direction of Martin Scorsese, the actor lost nearly 25 kilos. He showed up on set looking gaunt, which worried the crew. But he felt he couldn't play a 17th-century Jesuit priest with the body of a well-fed marine.

That same year, he worked with Jim Jarmusch on Paterson. In this film, he played a bus driver who writes poetry in his spare time. It's an exercise in total restraint that shows Driver can master silence as well as he can master a scream.

In 2015, he accepted the role of Kylo Ren in the new Star Wars trilogy. His base salary for the first installment was $600,000. But money wasn't what drove the change. He wanted to explore the fragility of a villain who can't handle his own power.

And the gamble paid off.

During the filming of Annette in 2021, he had to sing live while performing sex scenes and complex physical movements. He didn't want to use pre-recorded audio tracks. He likes the effort to show in his breathing and for viewers to feel the real weight of gravity on his body.

Rejecting His Own Image

Driver has an unbreakable rule in his career. He doesn't watch his own films or listen to recordings of his interviews. Seeing himself on screen causes him deep anxiety, because he only finds flaws in his performance. In 2019, he walked out of a radio interview when they started playing an audio clip of his performance in Marriage Story.

In 2023, he took direction from Michael Mann to play Enzo Ferrari. He had to age artificially and adopt an Italian accent that sparked debate among film critics. But he doesn't care about social media, since he doesn't even have public profiles on any of it.

Francis Ford Coppola chose him to star in Megalopolis in 2024. The shoot was chaotic, and Driver became the director's main support amid the press's doubts. The production budget exceeded $われ120 million funded directly by Coppola himself.

His work method still resembles that of a soldier. He arrives early on set and leaves last. He isn't interested in red carpet glamour or after-parties for premieres. He prefers to go home to Brooklyn with his family and his dog.

In 2019, his performance in the Broadway play Burn This earned him a Tony Award nomination. The show ran nearly three hours and demanded a physical toll that left him exhausted every night. The production contract specified that no video recordings were permitted under any professional circumstances.
