Anthony Daniels hated science fiction. In 1975 he agreed to meet George Lucas out of professional obligation, but he left the meeting convinced the project was nonsense. That young director showed him a drawing by Ralph McQuarrie, and something changed in his mind. The robot's gaze in the illustration struck him as vulnerable.
He accepted the role of C-3PO without knowing he would spend the rest of his life inside a fiberglass shell. During the shoot of Star Wars in 1976, he suffered constant injuries from the suit's sharp edges. No one on the technical crew treated him like an actor, because they saw him simply as a moving prop.
And the isolation was total.
The studio decided to hide his name in the opening credits to keep the illusion that the droid was a real machine. That decision nearly ruined his career before it even started. But Daniels fought for recognition and made sure his personality shone through the gold metal.
His training in mime proved essential for bringing to life a character who could not move his face. In 1980, he filmed The Empire Strikes Back with somewhat more mobility but the same suffocating heat. Technicians took two hours to assemble the full armor before each working day.
The actor didn't just provide the voice. Daniels always insisted on being physically present on set to interact with his fellow cast members. In 1983 he finished the original trilogy with Return of the Jedi and thought that chapter had closed for good.
But the phone rang again years later.
In 1999 he returned for the prequels, starting with The Phantom Menace. This time he had to work with a puppet full of cables before returning to the full suit in the later films. He is the only actor to appear in all nine films of the main saga, in addition to taking part in countless spin-off projects.
He published his memoir in 2019 under the title I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story. In that book, he describes how technology made his work easier, but also how he missed the real weight of the pieces in his hands. In 2023, he appeared in the series Ahsoka in a brief cameo that connected with the storyline of the eighties.
He has never stopped being the droid.
His contract with Disney allows him to oversee any use of his voice in video games or theme parks. This ensures the character's British cadence remains intact despite the passing of time. It does not allow archive recordings to replace his direct performance in the recording studio.
1977's original costume was auctioned in March 2024 for 800,000 dollars in a private bidding process.
