Daisy Ridley was serving beers in a London pub when J.J. Abrams decided she would be the new face of an entire galaxy. She didn't have an imposing résumé or famous last names in the British industry. Just a nervous energy that fit Disney's plans to revive its biggest franchise.
In 2015, the release of The Force Awakens shattered her privacy. She went from obscurity to magazine covers around the world in less than a week. But the process came at a real physical cost. She suffered anxiety attacks and digestive problems under the pressure of carrying Luke Skywalker's legacy in an era of toxic social media.
It was a controlled explosion.
Unlike many actors who rise to stardom, Ridley has always spoken openly about her endometriosis and polycystic ovaries. Diagnosed at age 15, she used her platform to normalize these conditions while filming grueling action scenes in deserts and forests. That honesty helped her connect with a fan base that extended far beyond science fiction fans.
After closing the trilogy in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker, the phone stopped ringing as often as expected. That's the usual toll of major franchises. The industry tends to typecast anyone who wields a lightsaber, and Ridley had to fight for smaller-scale projects to prove that her range wasn't limited to gazing at the horizon with intensity.
In 2017, she appeared in Murder on the Orient Express directed by Kenneth Branagh. It was a smart move to surround herself with veterans and learn the rhythms of an ensemble shoot. But not every project went well. Chaos Walking, originally shot in 2017 and released after many setbacks in 2021, became a commercial failure that tested her box office clout.
Movies don't always deliver.
Ridley didn't stop, and turned to independent film and executive producing for refuge. In 2023, she starred in Sometimes I Think About Dying, a small film in which she plays a socially isolated woman. It was a necessary change of pace, moving away from explosions and focusing on silence. Because it's in small films that the real ability to hold a close-up is truly tested.
In 2024, she faced one of her most physically demanding challenges in Young Woman and the Sea. To play Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel, she trained for months in open water. The film was shot with a commitment to technical realism that avoided excessive digital effects in the swimming sequences.
Then came the announcement many had been waiting for. In 2023, Disney confirmed that Ridley would return as Rey in a new film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The project is set fifteen years after her last appearance and aims to rebuild the Jedi Order from a different perspective. It's a risky bet for an actress who already knows the dangers of overexposure.
The production of this new chapter was scheduled with an estimated budget of $150 million.
