Abigail Spencer was born in Florida in 1981, surrounded by surfboards and the Gulf of Mexico.
Her father was a sports legend, and she seemed destined to follow a laid-back beachside lifestyle. But television came calling before she turned twenty.
In 1999, she landed a role on the daytime drama All My Children.
There, she learned to shoot at a blistering pace over two full seasons. That technical training kept her from getting rattled when the demanding shoots in Los Angeles arrived.
She spent almost a decade bouncing between supporting roles on shows nobody remembers. But in 2009, her luck changed when she joined the world of Mad Men.
She played Suzanne Farrell during season three. Although she appeared in only six episodes, her presence left a lasting impression on audiences following Don Draper's storyline.
That role opened the door to projects with more dramatic weight.
In 2013, she joined Rectify.
This SundanceTV series is what truly put her name on the list of actresses capable of carrying a heavy psychological drama. Over four seasons, she brought Amantha Holden to life and received a nomination for the Critics Choice Television Awards.
It was her best acting work to date, as she conveyed raw fragility without any big theatrics.
The industry decided Spencer could headline a big-budget production, and in 2016 she starred in Timeless. On this NBC series, she played a history professor who time travels to save the world.
The series had a very vocal fan base that saved it from cancellation several times. But it ultimately ended in 2018 with a two-hour special movie to wrap up the loose storylines.
While climbing the ranks, she also found time to appear on Suits.
There, she played Dana Scott from 2011 to 2019. Her chemistry with Gabriel Macht was obvious, and producers called her in whenever they needed to shake up the lead character's storyline.
In 2017, she joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy, replacing Bridget Regan in the role of Megan Hunt.
The actress had to balance medical drama with more independent projects. Spencer has always preferred to keep one foot in art-house film, despite her multimillion-dollar contracts in mainstream television.
In 2019, she starred in the series Reprisal for Hulu.
In 2023, she returned to comedy with the series Extended Family for NBC. On this project she shares the bill with Jon Cryer and Donald Faison, produced by Tom Werner.
The plot centers on a couple's amicable divorce as they decide to keep raising their children under the same roof.
The project was renewed for a second season based on the viewership numbers it drew after its premiere.
Off camera, she founded her own production company, Innerlight Films. In 2023, she produced the short film The Duke, based on her father's memoir about the world of professional surfing.
The film raised funds for cancer research through a series of private screenings in California.
