Amy Aquino wasn't headed for acting. At Yale, she studied pre-med biology and spent her hours among test tubes until theater got in the way of her plans. That scientific training left her with a precision she would later bring to every script that landed in her hands.
In 1988, she landed the role of Alice Baxter in Working Girl. It was her first major breakthrough in an industry that often punishes women who don't fit the mold of the ingenue. Yet she brought a dryness and intelligence that casting directors knew how to use for authority roles.
She decided to become the reliable professional.
She made her way to television and stayed for decades. In 1992, she joined the cast of Picket Fences as Dr. Joanna Hochman. That role earned her a SAG Award nomination and cemented her public image as the woman who really knows her stuff. And Aquino has that voice: the ability to rattle off medical or legal jargon without sounding like she's reading from a script.
On ER, she played Dr. Janet Coburn for thirteen years. She appeared on and off between 1994 and 2009, without needing to be in every episode for viewers to remember her standing in the hospital hierarchy.
In 2014, she took on the challenge of playing Lt. Grace Billets in Bosch. It was the project that consumed the most of her time. Over seven seasons and 68 episodes, she worked alongside Titus Welliver's character in a relationship built on mutual respect and shared cynicism. Aquino shot most of her scenes at the real-life Hollywood police station.
But her work away from the spotlight carries as much weight as her lines.
She served as secretary-treasurer of SAG-AFTRA for years marked by internal tensions. In that role, she managed multimillion-dollar budgets and negotiated working conditions during a period of technological change for the industry. Because Aquino keeps a closer eye on the numbers than many studio executives do.
In 2021, she entered the Marvel universe with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. She played Dr. Raynor, a military therapist tasked with getting Bucky Barnes's head straight. Critics praised her ability to hold her own opposite action movie stars with an unshakable calm.
In 2024, she appeared in the series Hacks as Paula.
Her career milestone in 2024 came under the direction of Clint Eastwood in the film Juror No. 2. Aquino plays Judge Hoyt in a courtroom drama that explores the limits of morality and the American legal system. Filming wrapped on this production with an estimated budget of $35 million.
