The weight of a name

Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore was too long a name for Broadway marquees. In 2010, he decided to shorten it out of pure pragmatism.

Before that, he was an athlete. He played college basketball in NCAA Division I with the Saint Mary's Gaels. But basketball wasn't giving him what he was looking for, so he ended up at New York University studying acting.

He took his time.

He started out on television in roles few people remember. He appeared in Crossing Jordan and Los 4400, doing the grunt work every actor does when trying to pay the rent in Los Angeles.

Silence as a tool

His real breakout came with House of Cards in 2013. He played Remy Danton for four seasons. That polished lobbyist let him prove he could dominate a scene without raising his voice.

In 2016, he landed the project that changed how the industry saw him. Barry Jenkins gave him the role of Juan in Moonlight. He appears only in the first act of the film, but his presence hangs over the rest of the movie.

He won his first Oscar with just twenty minutes on screen. He was the first Muslim actor to win the statuette.

He didn't want to always be the supporting player for others.

He repeated the feat in 2018 with Green Book. The industry pigeonholed him as the perfect supporting actor. But he wanted to lead his own projects, so he began turning down scripts that would keep him in the same mold of the calm, wise mentor.

The Bet on Risk

The third season of True Detective in 2019 was his trial by fire as a lead. He played Wayne Hays at three different stages of his life. The makeup helped, but his disoriented elderly gaze is what won over critics.

In 2021, he produced and starred in Swan Song for Apple TV+. It was a personal bet on intimate science fiction. The shoot forced him to play two versions of himself in an exhausting acting duel.

Because Ali prefers control over the material he takes on. So he started getting involved in script decisions aggressively to avoid the clichés of commercial fiction.

And the gamble paid off.

Marvel announced his casting for Blade at Comic-Con in 2019. What seemed like a masterstroke turned into a maze of delays and director changes that tested his patience.

The project went through multiple rewrites between 2022 and 2024. Ali held his ground even though production stopped several times because of creative problems and industry strikes.

While he waited for that shoot to begin, he joined the cast of Jurassic World Rebirth. In 2025, he filmed this new installment of the franchise under Gareth Edwards's direction, cementing his place in big-budget filmmaking.

The dinosaur movie's release was set for July 2, 2025 in the United States.

He also agreed to voice Titan in the animated series Invincible. It's a job that lets him record from anywhere, without the restrictions of a physical set or the long makeup sessions of his other roles.

The production of Blade was pulled from Disney's release calendar in late 2024 with no clear return date.
