Rick Hoffman spent years waiting tables while waiting for a call that never came. He had a face that casting directors found hard to fit into the traditional leading-man profiles of the nineties. But his intensity was real and very useful for roles as jittery guys.
In 1997, he landed a tiny role in Conspiracy, and that's when the quiet buzz around his career began. It wasn't a bed of roses, since the jobs were brief and thankless. He would appear in one scene, say three lines and vanish for months.
Nobody handed him anything.
In 2000, he got a chance on the series The Street. It didn't last long, but it helped the industry see that Hoffman could hold his own opposite the leads. The New York-born actor has always had a knack for being both irritating and magnetic at the same time.
Before 2011, his name only rang a bell with the most observant casting directors. But that year the script for Suits landed in his hands, and everything changed dramatically. The character of Louis Litt was designed to be the office villain we all love to hate.
Hoffman decided to take the character in a much more human and pathetic direction. He built a man obsessed with ballet, mud and cats (even though the actor has a severe allergy to these animals in real life). That allergy meant constant cleaning crews on set every time Litt had to hug a cat.
He made audiences go from hating him to empathizing with his deepest insecurities.
For nine seasons, the actor was the emotional backbone of a show about law that was really about ego. His salary per episode rose considerably while the character gained layers of complexity that weren't in the original script.
Hoffman's connection to genre films goes back a long way. In 2005, he appeared in Hostel by Eli Roth, and that gave him the chance to explore a much darker, more visceral side. Roth has always valued the unhinged gaze the actor can bring in front of the camera without apparent effort.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2023, he worked with the director again on the horror film Thanksgiving. He played Thomas Wright in a production that aimed to revive the spirit of the classic 1980s slasher films. Filming took place in various locations in Ontario on an estimated budget of fifteen million dollars.
Because Hoffman prefers projects where the celebrity has a broken edge or an uncomfortable secret. In 2023, he also took part in the TV movie Round and Round. The film premiered in December of that year and marked a shift toward romantic comedy with fantasy touches.
Filming his scenes in Toronto for the latest horror production took just thirty-five days.
