Madison Wolfe recorded her audition for James Wan in the living room of her home in Louisiana. She was thirteen, and they were looking for a girl who could carry the terror of a haunted house in London without feeling like a walking cliché. The director watched the tape and knew that gaze, charged with tension, was real.
In 2012, she made her film debut in a small role in On the Road. It was a low-key, no-fanfare start that taught her how a professional shoot worked before she turned ten. But the real jump in demands came with prestige television.
Nobody expected that coolness in front of the camera.
In 2014, she played Audrey Hart in the first season of True Detective. She was the daughter of the character played by Woody Harrelson, and her presence underlined the family breakdown at the heart of the story. She worked on complex scenes that required an unusual maturity for her age, and that caught the attention of casting directors in Los Angeles.
When filming on The Conjuring 2 began in 2016, the actress had to learn a British accent to play Janet Hodgson. She spent weeks listening to original recordings from the 1970s because she wanted to avoid caricature. The effort paid off, and critics praised her ability to convey vulnerability and menace at the same time.
And the gamble paid off.
During that production, she spent hours under prosthetic makeup and suspension wires. But Wolfe always preferred physical effort to heavy reliance on digital effects in post-production. In 2015, she had already experienced the pace of long-running series with Zoo, where she shot 26 episodes playing Clementine Lewis.
In 2017, she starred in I Kill Giants under the direction of Anders Walter. The film blended psychological drama with fantasy elements and required her to carry the story's emotional weight. It was a low-budget project shot mainly in Ireland and Belgium to take advantage of the overcast landscapes.
Despite offers to move to California permanently, she chose to keep her base in New Orleans. So in 2023, she joined Anne Rice's universe with the series Mayfair Witches. She played Tessa and shot again on location in her home state, for a production by AMC.
In 2024, she appeared in the thriller The Man in the White Van. The script was based on real events that took place in the 1970s, and Wolfe took on the role of a young woman stalked by a predator in a rural setting. The film was shot with a grainy look to replicate the visual style of the era.
Her career steers clear of big red carpet events and focuses on technical consistency. Because Wolfe understands film as a craft built on repetition and patience.
The production of The Man in the White Van locked its final cut at an exact runtime of 95 minutes.
