From the Ring to the Screenplay

Kali Reis didn't ask permission to enter the film industry. Long before stepping in front of a camera, she had already mastered the art of landing punches and returning them with surgical precision. Her heritage from the Seaconke Wampanoag and Cherokee tribes gives her a physical presence that intimidates through its lack of artifice.

In the ring, she won world titles in two different weight classes. But boxing is a trade with an expiration date, and Reis was looking for a different way to tell stories about missing women in Indigenous communities.

That's how her first major project was born.

In 2021, she starred in Catch the Fair One, directed by Josef Kubota Wladyka. She was not only the lead actress but also helped create the original story. She earned a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards for a role that demanded more silence than dialogue.

The film works as a vehicle for social criticism. Reis plays a boxer searching for her younger sister and draws on her own athletic experience to lend authenticity to the action scenes.

And the entertainment world took notice.

Alaska's Cold and Maturity

By 2024, Reis's career made its definitive leap into big-budget television. She played Detective Evangeline Navarro in the fourth season of True Detective, sharing the screen with Jodie Foster. The production was filmed entirely in Iceland to simulate the Alaskan landscapes.

Her portrayal of Navarro broke with the usual mold of the police partner. She brought a toughness that didn't need to shout to be effective. The series drew record-breaking audiences for HBO and surpassed the viewing numbers of previous seasons.

But filming was not easy. Extreme weather forced the crew to work constant night shifts for weeks. Reis kept up her physical training routine even under those conditions.

Reis chooses her roles with an unusual amount of care for Hollywood.

Contracts and the Future on Screen

In 2023, he joined the cast of Wind River: The Next Chapter to keep exploring the crime thriller genre in rural settings. This sequel aims to maintain the tension of Taylor Sheridan's original film through an oppressive atmosphere.

She also signed on to star in Mercy, a science fiction production co-starring Chris Pratt. Filming for the movie was scheduled for spring 2024, with a high production budget and cutting-edge visual effects.

She prefers projects that maintain a direct connection to her roots or that challenge traditional perceptions of women in action cinema. Her contract for the film Mercy includes specific clauses about the physical portrayal of her character.

The release of this production is set for August 15, 2025.
