Henry Thomas truly cried in front of Steven Spielberg because he was thinking about his dead dog. That audition tape from 1981 is still studied in acting schools for its raw honesty. The director gave him the role of Elliott on the spot, and the life of the Texas kid changed in an instant.
In 1982, the release of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial grossed nearly $800 million worldwide. But fame was not a gift for the young actor. Thomas has explained that seeing his face on cereal boxes and toy store shelves caused him anxiety that was hard to manage at age eleven.
He felt like a zoo animal.
That is why he decided to step away from the bright spotlight of Los Angeles for a while. He returned home to San Antonio to try to have a normal adolescence (as normal as it can be when you're the most famous kid on the planet). Hollywood tends to devour its child stars, and he did not want to end up in the tabloids over addiction problems.
In the mid-1980s, he starred in Secret Game (1984), a teen espionage thriller that departed from the family-friendly tone of his debut. But major studios were no longer calling as often. He spent years taking supporting roles in minor films and focusing on his music career with his band The Blue Heelers.
In 1994, he won back some lost ground thanks to Legends of the Fall. He played Samuel Ludlow and shared the screen with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins. It was a real test to prove he could hold his own alongside the heavyweights of classic drama, so audiences saw more than just the kid in the red sweatshirt.
He managed to survive being forgotten.
Martin Scorsese cast him in 2002 for Gangs of New York, where he played Johnny Sirocco. It was a grueling shoot at the Cinecittà studios in Rome. Thomas had to adapt to a work environment where improvisation and the intensity of Daniel Day-Lewis set the daily pace of the scenes.
Thomas's career found an unexpected haven in psychological horror after his encounter with director Mike Flanagan. In 2016, they shot Ouija: Origin of Evil, and a constant collaboration was established from that moment on that continues to this day. This partnership has allowed him to play complex, dark characters that the industry denied him in his youth.
In 2018, he played the young version of Hugh Crain in The Haunting of Hill House for Netflix. The series was a massive critical success. Thomas reunited with the same team for The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020) and the miniseries Midnight Mass (2021), where he played a family man on a remote island.
His ability to convey restrained drama is his greatest weapon.
In 2023, he joined the cast of The Fall of the House of Usher, closing out a run of gothic horror productions for streaming platforms. That same year, he also took part in the prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. The actor currently lives on a farm in Oregon and avoids film industry social events whenever he can.
The property where he lives covers 80 acres of land.
