From Elementary School Classrooms to the Hollywood Grind

Levy Tran never set out to be in the spotlight. Before her tattooed skin became a draw for casting directors in Los Angeles, this Californian of Vietnamese descent spent her mornings at a kindergarten. Her original plan was teaching and the stability of a steady salary in the education sector.

But destiny has a strange way of showing up. One day she decided to leave the classroom to try her luck as a model, and she soon discovered that her look broke the industry's usual molds for Asian American talent. In 2015, she needed only a few seconds on screen for half the world to start wondering who the girl waving the start flag at the races in Furious 7 was.

That debut was brief but defining.

That shoot opened the doors of an industry that often typecasts actresses based on their physical appearance. Tran decided she didn't want to be just a pretty face or a body decorated with ink. So she began training in martial arts and looking for roles where the punches were real.

The TV Assault and the Weight of Weapons

In 2018, her luck changed with The First Purge. In this installment of the political horror franchise, she proved she could carry dramatic tension while dodging bullets. And she did it without shortcuts. Because Levy Tran prefers to perform her own stunts whenever the production company's insurance allows it.

Television gave her the paycheck she needed to choose her projects more carefully. Her arrival on MacGyver in 2019 changed the show's dynamic. She played Desi Nguyen, an agent assigned to protect the lead who never needed anyone to rescue her. She shot 36 episodes of pure physical action before CBS canceled the series in 2021.

And the physical toll came due.

Those years of nonstop TV work taught her that the pace of series can be a meat grinder. But she also understood that for a woman with her profile, every role she landed was a victory against Hollywood stereotypes. She didn't want to be the ninja girl or the silent sidekick.

Scars, Adrenaline and the Future of Genre Film

In 2023, she got the chance to join one of the most testosterone-fueled franchises in modern film. In Expend4bles, she shared the screen with names that once covered the walls of her childhood bedroom. She was the one chosen to bring fresh blood to a group of mercenaries who were already going gray.

Critics weren't especially kind to the movie, but for Tran it meant breaking into the club of international action actors. She earned a six-figure salary for a role that required weeks of fight choreography, meticulously staged on sets in Eastern Europe.

Off set, she keeps a low profile and steers clear of red carpets whenever she can. She prefers to spend her time on tattoo culture and personal projects that have nothing to do with the industry's fake glitter. Her career hasn't followed the usual playbook of the teen star.

In 2025, she is set to begin preproduction on an independent thriller in which, in addition to acting, she will serve as a technical consultant for the fight scenes. The film's budget barely reaches $5 million. There are no major studios behind the project, and filming will take place entirely on location in Georgia on a tight 22-day schedule.
