Josh Stewart was born in Diana, West Virginia, a small town where future prospects were limited. He studied acting at West Virginia University and then moved to New York to try to break into the theater scene. But film and television came calling before Broadway did. In 2004, he landed the role of Brendan Finney in Third Watch, a job that led him to move permanently to Los Angeles.
His anonymity didn't last long.
In 2007, he joined the cast of Dirt alongside Courteney Cox. He played Holt McLaren and began refining the dry style that defines him. Although the show only lasted two seasons, it put him on the radar of major casting directors. David Fincher chose him in 2008 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, where he shared scenes with Brad Pitt in a brief but pivotal role for the plot.
His real breakthrough with niche audiences came in 2009 with The Collector. Stewart played Arkin, a principled thief who ends up trapped in a house full of deadly traps. It was a low-budget production that grossed five times its initial budget at the box office. The film became a cult favorite among fans of physical horror.
Christopher Nolan called him in 2012 to join the cast of The Dark Knight Rises. Stewart played Barsad, and his on-screen presence was enough to convince the director to work with him again in 2014 for Interstellar. This time he only voiced the robot CASE, and his technical work was essential in giving personality to a machine in the middle of space.
And the industry took notice.
It was not all an easy road.
Stewart decided he didn't want to depend on other people's scripts forever. In 2013, he wrote and directed The Hunted, a found-footage film he shot with a minimal crew. But his biggest personal project was Back Fork in 2019. In this film he explored addiction drama in rural America and took on the roles of writer, director and lead actor all at once.
On television, he found unusual stability thanks to Criminal Minds. For years he played William LaMontagne Jr., and his character became one of the audience's favorites because of his relationship with the character played by A.J. Cook. But in January 2024, the actor confirmed on social media that he would not return for the series' new seasons.
In 2023, he took part in The Last Stop in Yuma County, a suspense thriller shot in desert locations. The production was completed in less than thirty days to reduce the logistical costs of shooting on location. For the shoot of Back Fork in 2019, the crew barely exceeded fifteen people due to the limitations of private funding.
