Synopsis of Southland

Southland follows officers of the Los Angeles Police Department in their daily work, both on patrol and in investigations. Veteran John Cooper is tasked with training rookie Ben Sherman, and his approach to the job leaves Sherman questioning whether he has what it takes to become a cop. Also featured are Detective Lydia Adams, who must balance her cases with the responsibility of living with her mother, and Officer Chickie Brown, who aspires to join the SWAT team, the police department's elite unit. Created by Ann Biderman, the series aired on NBC and later on TNT. Its focus is on the characters' stories rather than the police cases.

Trivia about Southland

The series received three Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Stunt Coordination and won the award in 2011 and 2012.
The producers used both real gang members and former gang members to play the gang members in the series.
In October 2009, NBC announced the cancellation of the series two weeks before its second season was scheduled to premiere.
Matt Zoller Seitz of Vulture called it the most gripping cop show since the first season of NBC's Homicide.
The series' move to TNT brought a significant budget cut and a corresponding reduction in the cast.
The first season ended with seven episodes aired, although NBC had initially ordered 13 episodes; the network halted production after ratings declined, bottoming out at 4.64 million viewers.
TNT renewed the series for a fourth season of ten episodes in March 2011, which premiered on January 17, 2012; it later ordered a fifth season of ten episodes.
Netflix added all five seasons in the United States on January 16, 2026, but has not announced a sixth season, a reboot, or any continuation of production.
