Dorian Missick was born in East Orange in 1976 and grew up between New Jersey and Brooklyn without a clear plan B. His entry into the industry was anything but glamorous, as he started out in commercials and tiny roles on 1990s television series.
And then came the movies.
In 2002 he shared the screen with Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant in Two Weeks Notice. It was his first real encounter with the Hollywood machine. That romantic comedy taught him how a big-budget set worked, but it didn't define his style as an actor.
Missick specialized in celebrities who hold the plot together from the margins. In 2006, he played Elvis in Lucky Number Slevin and proved he could hold his own against actors of the caliber of Bruce Willis or Ben Kingsley. He took on roles in independent productions while his voice began to be heard in consoles across half the world.
He provided the voice of Victor Vance in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories in the same year, 2006. It was a voice-over job that gave him unexpected visibility among an audience that rarely set foot in movie theaters.
Television gave him the stability that film sometimes denied him. During 2012 and 2013, he played Officer Ruben Robinson on Southland. It was a gritty, straightforward job. Filming on the streets of Los Angeles demanded a realism that Missick already had from his time in New York.
But his ability to embody moral ambiguity shone especially in Animal Kingdom from 2018 on. In this series, his physical presence and calm vocal tone offset the constant violence of the crime plot.
His marriage to actress Simone Missick in 2012 created one of the most solid couples in American television. They worked together on the series All Rise in 2019. It was a professional decision that mixed the personal with the professional, and critics had no complaints about the final result.
He delivered the goods.
In 2020, he stepped into the shoes of Jamal Bishop in For Life. The series tackled the injustices of the prison system, and Missick brought the gravitas needed to keep the story from sliding into cheap melodrama. He knows how to use silence better than many leading men.
In 2024 he took part in Shirley, playing Ron Dellums in the biopic about congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. That same year he worked under Lee Daniels in the Netflix horror film The Deliverance. In this latter film he played Reverend James in a setting of demonic possession and family drama.
His career has always moved between social realism and genre entertainment without losing his composure. He doesn't chase the spotlight constantly, but his name appears in the credits of productions that aim to say something more than a simple escapist story.
The Deliverance was produced on an estimated budget of $65 million.
