Denise Crosby may carry the surname of a Hollywood legend, but she built her career by slamming doors. Her film debut was a small role in 48 Hrs. in 1982. She had no memorable lines in that action movie. But it helped casting directors notice that direct, professional gaze.
In 1987, she accepted the role of Tasha Yar in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The contract was for six seasons and guaranteed a financial stability almost unheard of for a young actress. But the script kept her stuck at a console with little development. So she asked to be killed off.
It was a suicidal decision.
That exit in 1988 shook the industry, because nobody walked away from such a big ship for artistic reasons. The producers accepted her departure and abruptly wrote the character out. But her relationship with the franchise didn't end there. In 1991, she returned to play Sela (Yar's half-Romulan daughter) in several key episodes.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1989, she starred in Pet Sematary under the direction of Mary Lambert. Playing Rachel Creed gave her a different kind of visibility beyond spaceship sci-fi. The shoot was tense because of the emotional weight of Stephen King's script. And the film earned 57 million dollars in the U.S. market alone.
Throughout the 1990s, she worked steadily in television and independent film. In 1997, she decided to explore fan culture from the other side of the camera. She produced the documentary Trekkies to analyze the obsession of the fans of the franchise that made her famous. The project got a sequel in 2004 due to interest from European audiences.
Her talent for gritty drama was confirmed years later in prestige series. In 2014, she appeared in The Walking Dead, bringing to life Mary, one of the leaders of Terminus. Her time on the zombie series was brief but extremely violent. Because Denise Crosby has always preferred roles with real impact over long, empty stretches.
She was looking for complex celebrities to play.
In 2013, she joined the cast of Ray Donovan playing Deb. She worked on fifteen episodes of the Showtime series, bringing a much-needed steadiness to a testosterone-heavy set. In 2019, she took part in Suits as Faye Richardson, a strict lawyer tasked with keeping order at the firm at the center of the show. She never needed to raise her voice to command authority on screen.
Before shooting, she reads the script looking for the real conflict in the scene. In 2023 she joined the cast of the long-running series General Hospital, playing Carolyn Webber. Her involvement in the Webber family storyline stretched across several blocks of episodes filmed in California.
The production of her first documentary about fan culture in 1997 cost about 1.2 million dollars.
