Kevin Alejandro was born in San Antonio and raised in Snyder, a Texas town of just eleven thousand residents. There were no theaters or major film studios near his home. So he decided to move to Los Angeles with little more than the essentials to try to make a name for himself in an industry that tends to quickly typecast Latino actors.
His early years consisted of a string of brief roles in police series and medical dramas. But in 2006, he landed a spot in the cast of Ugly Betty to play Santos. That gave him the visibility he needed so casting directors stopped seeing him as just another extra with a single line.
It was his first long-term contract and proof that he could carry a complex emotional storyline.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2009, he put on the uniform for Southland. The series aimed for gritty realism, and Kevin Alejandro fit the role of Detective Nate Moretta. It was physically demanding because it was shot on real locations in Los Angeles. Right after, he traded the asphalt for the supernatural in True Blood during 2010.
Many actors get stuck in guest-star roles for their entire careers. He went from Parenthood to Arrow barely having time to unpack his bags. On the superhero series, he played Sebastian Blood in 2013, and that character carried a political weight that forced him to trade his usual range for something darker.
His big break came in 2016 with Lucifer. Playing Detective Dan Espinoza allowed him to explore humor within a crime drama. Over the show's six seasons, his character went from an annoying antagonist to an essential ally for the audience.
So she decided to step behind the camera.
In 2018, he directed his first episode of Lucifer, titled Once Upon a Time. He discovered that controlling the pace of a scene from the director's chair interested him just as much as acting in front of it. He repeated the experience several times before the series ended for good in 2021.
In 2022, he joined the cast of Fire Country to play Manny Robbins. The series follows convicts who fight wildfires in Northern California. Filming required specific technical training to handle firefighting equipment convincingly on screen.
Meanwhile, he lent his voice to Jayce Talis in the animated series Arcane. The second season of this production premiered in 2024 with an estimated total budget of 250 million dollars for the entire franchise.
Alejandro runs his own production company, Alejandro Films, together with his wife, Leslie de Jesus Alejandro. In 2024, the company had three different projects in technical development and external financing stages.
