Jonathan Rhys Meyers was expelled from North Monastery school in Cork before turning sixteen. It wasn't for one specific serious offense but for an accumulation of absences that the school decided it would no longer tolerate. He spent his mornings in pool halls. There, a casting agent looking for boys for War of the Buttons discovered him in 1994. Although he didn't get the part, that initial rejection set in motion a momentum that took him to London with no backup plan.
Chance is often the best representative.
In 1996 he starred in Michael Collins under the direction of Neil Jordan. He played the protagonist's killer and appeared on screen for only a few minutes. But his unsettling gaze immediately caught the attention of the British film industry. Meyers has a look the camera picks up from miles away (sharp cheekbones and lips that always seem tense). In 1998 he came to Velvet Goldmine, where he played a glam rock star inspired by David Bowie.
The film became a cult classic and proved he could sing and carry the weight of a complex production. That's when Hollywood started knocking on his door with multimillion-dollar contracts.
In 2005 he shot Match Point under the direction of Woody Allen. The New York director was after a specific coolness that Meyers projected naturally. That role as a social-climbing tennis pro who infiltrates London high society changed his professional standing. The film grossed more than $85 million worldwide. That same year he won a Golden Globe for his performance in the miniseries Elvis, beating out names with far more clout in the American industry.
But massive success came with The Tudors in 2007.
He played Henry VIII in a way that broke from the usual historical portraits of obese, bearded men. Meyers proposed an athletic, volatile, and deeply sexualized monarch that kept audiences glued to their TV sets for four seasons. But while his face graced every magazine cover, the tabloids began reporting on his struggles with alcohol and his stints in rehab. The pressure of shooting schedules lasting ten months a year eventually took a toll on his mental health.
And the industry tends not to forgive instability.
After the historical series ended in 2010, his presence in major studio productions began to fade. He took part in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones in 2013, but the franchise did not perform at the box office as expected. So he turned to smaller projects and cable television. In 2017 he joined the cast of Vikings to play Bishop Heahmund (a religious warrior that allowed him to tap into the physical intensity that defines him once again).
In 2021 he worked on the post-apocalyptic thriller The Survivalist alongside John Malkovich. A year later he shot Wifelike, which explored the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence in a B-movie setting. During 2023 he released Ambush and Disquiet. These are films that are often distributed straight to digital platforms without going through traditional movie theaters.
In 2024 he shot Operation Blood Hunt on location in Thailand. The filming of this action and horror movie was completed in just three weeks with a small crew. The production used practical effects for the creatures in order to cut digital post-production costs.
