Synopsis of Counterpart

Howard Silk is a quiet, discreet employee who has spent decades working for the Office of Interchange, a United Nations agency based in Berlin. His post is so modest that no one explains to him what his work really means, which consists of exchanging seemingly meaningless messages. One day he discovers that the organization hides an access door to a parallel world. There lives Prime, his counterpart, an agent experienced in covert operations. The two find themselves caught in a web of intrigue in which they can only trust each other. Created by Justin Marks and starring J. K. Simmons, the series airs on Starz and explores themes such as identity and a lost love.

Trivia about Counterpart

Starz chief operating officer Jeffrey Hirsch said Counterpart was "a very male-oriented show" and that the network had committed to two seasons before setting its premium female-focused strategy.

Part of the shoot took place in Potsdam at Babelsberg Studios, which also co-produced the series.

The first season earned a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 8.4 out of 10 based on 49 reviews.

Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone was less enthusiastic about the second season, noting that the series had become too convoluted and hard to follow.

Starz canceled the series in February 2019, shortly before the end of the second season, and production company MRC tried to find another platform to fund a third.

The second season averaged roughly 225,000 weekly viewers in live broadcasts, compared with 371,000 for the first, according to figures published during the cancellation.

The opening title sequence won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Main Title Design.
