The Lawyer Who Preferred the Crows

Adeel Akhtar completed his law degree at Oxford Brookes without any intention of setting foot in a courtroom. He chose to move to New York to study at the Actors Studio and try his luck in an industry that rarely offered lead roles to children of Pakistani immigrants. It was a risky decision that his family didn't fully understand at first.

In 2010, he played Faisal in Four Lions. His character tries to train crows to become suicide bombers in a pitch-black satire of jihadism. Akhtar made a bomb maker come across as both tender and maddening at once. Director Chris Morris knew how to make the most of that hangdog look, which would become his greatest working tool.

And the gamble paid off.

But British television is what truly gave him room to experiment. In 2013 he joined the cast of Utopia to bring to life Wilson Wilson, a paranoid survivalist who ends up losing an eye in one of the most brutal scenes of the decade. In that series, Akhtar proved he could carry the weight of a complex plot without relying on big physical theatrics.

The Weight of History at the BAFTAs

In 2017, he achieved something no one had managed before in the UK film and TV industry. He won the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the TV movie Murdered by My Father. He became the first actor of color to win in that category in the history of the awards. He played a father who kills his daughter in the name of honor, and his performance avoided turning the character into a one-dimensional monster.

Nobody in London expected that kind of impact.

Akhtar has a remarkable ability to inhabit characters on the verge of a nervous breakdown. In 2021 he starred in Ali & Ava, and critics praised his performance as a man who turns to music for solace after a breakup. The small film, shot in Bradford, earned several nominations at the British Academy Film Awards thanks to the natural chemistry between its leads.

In 2019, they joined the world of Enola Holmes to play Inspector Lestrade. The role was a supporting one, but it showed how they handled big-budget productions for streaming platforms. They worked alongside Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill, providing comic counterpoint that eased the tension of the detective plot.

Bradford and the Global Market

In 2024 he joined the cast of Engaños (Fool Me Once) on Netflix. The thriller series racked up more than 80 million views during its first month of release worldwide. Akhtar played detective Sami Kierce, and his presence gave the show an emotional anchor amid a story full of plot twists that sometimes bordered on the absurd.

The audience responded right away.

As a result, his name started coming up for projects that moved away from British social realism. In 2023, he wrapped filming on the series Sweet Tooth, where he played Dr. Aditya Singh. The job required long stretches in New Zealand, far from his usual home in London. The production demanded a level of visual effects work that Akhtar hadn't handled in the early years of his career.

Before filming, he reads the script looking for the character's weaknesses rather than their strengths. He knows audiences sympathize with failure before they sympathize with triumph. That's why his characters often have a vulnerable side that makes them human, even when their actions are morally questionable.

Filming the second season of Sweet Tooth in 2023 forced the production company to hire more than 300 local crew members in Auckland to complete the location scenes.
