Julian Barratt was born in Leeds in 1968 and, before becoming Howard Moon, was an obsessive jazz musician. In the nineties, he played guitar in funk bands while trying to carve out a place on the London comedy circuit. His meeting with Noel Fielding in 1998 at a theater in High Wycombe changed the course of British television.
The creative duo formed The Mighty Boosh around a premise mixing talking animals and analog synthesizers. In 2004, the show hit the screen after a successful run on radio and in theater. Barratt took on the role of lead writer and composer of the original soundtrack.
Barratt never chased easy fame.
His style moved away from traditional sitcoms, favoring visual absurdity and dry dialogue. But the show's massive success in 2007 forced him to manage a fanbase that bordered on religious fanaticism. In 2009, they decided to end the project to avoid total creative burnout.
After the series came to an end, the actor sought out projects that would let him explore darker material. In 2016, he starred in Flowers alongside Olivia Colman, playing a children's book author battling clinical depression. It was a necessary change of tone to move away from the label of purely physical comedian.
That same year he premiered Mindhorn.
In this film, he played a washed-up TV star who must help the police catch a real killer. He co-wrote the script with Simon Farnaby, aiming to parody the detective shows of the 1980s. The production had a tight budget and was shot entirely on the Isle of Man.
Music has always been his refuge.
In 2021, he took part in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, playing Doctor Preece. Two years later, in 2023, he joined the cast of the miniseries Great Expectations to bring Wemmick to life. His on-screen presence often ties to characters who hide a melancholy strangeness beneath an ordinary surface.
His most recent recorded appearance is in the series Knuckles from 2024, where he plays the role of Jack Sinclair across three episodes. Filming for his scenes took place on locations in London and Buckinghamshire. The production contract set a six-week shooting schedule for his block of scenes.
