Graphic Design Before the Stage

Georgie Glen didn't set foot in an acting school until the age of 24. Before that, her life revolved around graphic design and editorial layouts at a textbook publisher in Glasgow. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art, but her passion for theater led her to move to London in the early 80s.

And the risk was worth it.

Her training at the Questors Theatre in Ealing helped her realize that her look suited character roles better than young leading parts. She never chased quick stardom, because her technical training gave her a patience that some of her classmates lacked. Her professional debut came with a small appearance in the series Screen Two in 1987.

For years she balanced supporting jobs with a steady presence in British theater. There was no sudden burst of fame; instead, her credits in BBC productions steadily piled up. But her face became familiar to the general public thanks to her talent for playing authoritative women, sometimes stern and other times deeply compassionate.

Authority as Her Main Register

In 2018, she joined the cast of Call the Midwife to bring Millicent Higgins to life. This role as an efficient receptionist with unshakable moral principles became one of the pillars of the series in its later seasons. Glen filmed more than 50 episodes of this production, building an acting style based on economy of gesture and perfect diction.

The British film industry didn't take long to recruit her.

In 2017, she appeared in the second season of The Crown, playing Ruth, Lady Fermoy, the grandmother of Diana, Princess of Wales. It was a brief but essential role that showed the rigid royal etiquette of the era. The actress drew on her own Scottish roots to give the character a coldness that London critics unanimously praised.

Her film career has also left some notable marks across very different genres. In 2003 she joined the cast of Calendar Girls, and in 2012 she took part in the film adaptation of Les Misérables directed by Tom Hooper. Despite the scale of these productions, she has always preferred the working rhythm of British television for its pace and technical demands.

Comedy and Long-Running Shoots

Glen's comic flair is something casting directors often use to break the tension in historical dramas. In 2011, she played Audrey McFall in the series Waterloo Road, where she stayed for three consecutive years. Her character was an eccentric history teacher whose personality offset the darker storylines at the school.

Unlike many actors of her generation, Georgie Glen has no problem moving into Hollywood action films when the script calls for it. In 2017 she appeared in The Hitman’s Bodyguard alongside Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. It was a big-budget shoot that contrasted with the restraint of her usual work in London theater.

It's all a matter of craft.

In 2023, she appeared in the comedy series The Power of Parker playing Gladys. This BBC production, set in the 90s, let her explore a more down-to-earth style, far from nurses' uniforms or period costumes. Her ability to switch between genres without losing her essence is what has allowed her to work nonstop for four decades.

In 2024, the actress stayed committed to the fourteenth season of Call the Midwife, filmed at Longcross Studios. Filming for these episodes was scheduled to meet the public broadcaster's airing needs well into 2025. Each episode requires an average of ten filming days per shooting unit.
