London, 1593, during the reign of Elizabeth I. William Shakespeare is a young, talented playwright going through a rough patch. He works for Philip Henslowe, owner of The Rose theater, and the company needs a play to fill its performances. Shakespeare has a title, Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter, and a half-written comedy. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot concentrate as pressure mounts from producers and theater owners. What he lacks is the inspiration to finish the script. Directed by John Madden, the film stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes.

I would stay asleep my whole life, if I could dream myself into a company of players.
I know something of a woman in a man's profession. Yes, by God, I do know about that.
Love denied blights the soul we owe to God.
[to Lord Wessex] Have her then, but you're a lordly fool. She's been plucked since I saw her last, and not by you... it takes a woman to know it.
You see? The comsumptives plot against me. "Will Shakespeare has a play, let us go and cough through it."
Master Kent, as I foretold, Lord Wessex has lost his wife to the theater. Go, make your farewell, and send her out.
