Synopsis of Halt and Catch Fire

In 1983, on the Silicon Prairie of Texas, the personal computer revolution begins to take shape. Joe MacMillan, a fast-talking entrepreneur with little technical training, joins Cardiff Electric, a mainframe software company based in Dallas. His goal is to build a revolutionary team that can take on IBM just as the company dominates the PC market. To do it, he needs talent, so he recruits hardware engineer Gordon Clark and young programmer Cameron Howe. Created by Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers and aired on AMC, the series follows this team as it tries to compete with the tech giant, putting their careers and ambitions on the line.

Trivia about Halt and Catch Fire

The series had low ratings throughout its run: only the first episode topped one million viewers during its initial airing.

The pilot was screened at the South by Southwest festival, and then AMC posted it on its Tumblr page, making it the first TV series premiered on that platform.

Before the fourth season, AMC closed the gender pay gap among its four leads and raised the salaries of Mackenzie Davis and Kerry Bishé to match those of Lee Pace and Scoot McNairy.

The role of Cameron was the hardest to fill, and Dakota Johnson and Brie Larson auditioned for it.

Scoot McNairy and Kerry Bishé had already played a married couple in the movie Argo a year earlier, so the casting was a reunion for both of them.

Cantwell was six weeks old when, in 1982, his family moved from Elgin, Illinois, to Plano, Texas, because his father had accepted a job as a systems software salesman.

During their research, Cantwell and Rogers found stories of Compaq engineers who took the risk of reverse-engineering the IBM PC.

AMC announced the renewal of "Halt and Catch Fire" for a final fourth season just 24 hours before airing the third season finale, and the creators received the news in an unexpected phone call.
