Annette O'Toole didn't need a stroke of luck to break into the industry. Before turning thirteen, she was already moving around Los Angeles sets with the ease of someone who grew up between dance classes and constant auditions. Her mother ran a dance school in Texas, which gave her an iron discipline that she applied to her first television jobs.
Television in the late sixties was her real training ground.
She appeared in The Partridge Family and Gunsmoke with brief but direct roles. In 1975, she made her film debut in Smile, and the industry began to see her as more than a pretty face for shampoo ads. But she preferred characters with rough edges and long silences.
In 1982, she worked under Paul Schrader on Cat People. It was a complicated shoot where sexual tension and horror blended in strange ways. O'Toole played Alice with a naturalness that contrasted with the film's dark atmosphere. That role allowed her to move away from the naive girl image Hollywood was trying to impose on her.
In 1983, she joined the cast of Superman III to bring Lana Lang to life. Many viewers remember that installment for the humor of Richard Pryor or the duel between the good and bad Supermen. Still, O'Toole's performance brought a human warmth that saved several scenes from commercial silliness. The film grossed 80 million dollars in the U.S. market despite divided reviews.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1990, she took on the role of Beverly Marsh in the miniseries It. The adaptation of Stephen King's novel was a ratings phenomenon on ABC, drawing more than 30 million viewers. O'Toole managed to convey the trauma of a woman who returns to her hometown to face her worst nightmares without tipping into melodrama.
In 1999, she married actor Michael McKean. It was not only a romantic union, since the two began writing songs together for Christopher Guest's projects. In 2003, they received an Oscar nomination for the song A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow from the film A Mighty Wind. It was an unexpected recognition that put the spotlight on her talent as a songwriter.
In 2001, she returned to the DC Comics universe in an unusual way for the industry. She went from being the hero's youthful girlfriend to playing Martha Kent in the series Smallville. She appeared in nearly every episode of the first six seasons and returned occasionally until the series finale in 2011.
The contract lasted a decade.
Her character on The CW series became the show's moral anchor. But Annette O'Toole always found room for theater and independent productions away from the spotlight of Vancouver. In 2019, she joined the cast of Virgin River to bring Hope McCrea to life, the mayor of an idyllic town with a personality that her neighbors find hard to take.
In 2024, filming for the sixth season of Virgin River was scheduled in British Columbia under a ten-episode production order. The series budget was adjusted following the previous year's union negotiations in Hollywood. The shooting schedule called for twelve-hour days to meet the post-production deadline in the fall.
