Her Baptism of Fire with Peckinpah

Mariette Hartley didn't have to spend years in the shadows before Sam Peckinpah gave her her first real break. In 1962, she made her film debut in the western Ride the High Country. The shoot was a brutal training ground because the director had no patience for newcomers' mistakes.

Her theater training with Eva Le Gallienne allowed her to hold her own opposite giants like Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea. Hartley played a young woman trying to escape an oppressive and violent environment. Critics praised her clear-eyed gaze and a physical presence that departed from the female stereotypes of the era.

And the industry took notice.

For the rest of the 1960s, she became a familiar face on television. She appeared in episodes of Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and The Twilight Zone. But her most memorable moment for fans of science fiction came in 1969. In the next-to-last episode of the original Star Trek series, she played Zarabeth, a woman exiled to a glacial past who wins the heart of the cold Spock.

The Woman Who Was Never Married to James Garner

In the late 1970s, Hartley experienced a professional situation that was as surreal as it was successful. She starred in a series of commercials for Polaroid cameras alongside actor James Garner. The chemistry between them was so natural and their dialogue so quick that American audiences were convinced they were a real married couple.

Nobody believed that this was fiction.

Hartley had a T-shirt printed with the message “I'm Not Mrs. James Garner” to stop the constant harassment from fans and the tabloid press. It was a brilliant publicity strategy that lasted six years and produced more than 300 different ads. That media exposure allowed her to choose projects with greater creative freedom in a Hollywood that was beginning to punish actresses over forty.

In 1979 she won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress for her work on The Incredible Hulk. In the episode titled Married, she played Dr. Carolyn Fields, a woman with a terminal illness who marries David Banner. It was a raw dramatic role that broke with the usual lightness of television comic book adaptations.

But television pays the bills.

The Weight of Reality Behind the Spotlights

Hartley's career cannot be explained solely through her fictional characters. In 1990 she published her autobiography, Breaking the Silence, in which she revealed the impact of her father's suicide and her own battles with bipolar disorder. This decision moved her away from the spotlight of major productions but established her as a key figure in mental health awareness in the United States.

She founded the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and devoted much of her time to giving lectures across the country. She wasn't seeking sympathy but rather to break the stigma surrounding an illness that had devastated her family for generations. Her work away from the set earned her a respect that far outweighed any Academy Award.

Despite her activism, she never stopped working in independent productions and weighty supporting roles. Between 2018 and 2022 she recurred on the series 9-1-1, playing Patricia Clark. Her presence brought a necessary gravity to the family storylines of the Ryan Murphy production.

In 2021, she wrote and starred in the movie Our Almost Completely True Story alongside her husband, Jerry Sroka. Directed by Don Scardino, the film had a limited independent production budget. Filming took place mainly on location in Los Angeles under strict health protocols.
