Anna Chlumsky was eleven years old when she kissed Macaulay Culkin on camera in 1991. That moment in My Girl was not just a generational milestone but the start of a tense relationship with fame that would lead her to leave film for nearly a decade.
And the decision was deliberate.
By the mid-1990s, the industry had stopped calling her because she no longer fit the child prodigy mold. Instead of fighting for mediocre roles in B-movies, she chose to enroll at the University of Chicago to study International Relations. She graduated in 2002 and turned to the publishing world, working as a fact-checker for the Zagat guide and as an assistant at HarperCollins.
But the sting of her performance was still there.
In 2005, she decided her time in the office was over. She enrolled at the Atlantic Acting School in New York to rebuild her craft from technique rather than childhood instinct. It was a risky bet that took four years to pay off on the big screen.
In 2009, director Armando Iannucci cast her in In the Loop. Chlumsky played a press assistant in Washington and showed that her gift for fast-paced dialogue was intact. That project was the seed of her biggest professional success to date.
Her real breakthrough came with the premiere of Veep in 2012. For seven seasons she played Amy Brookheimer, Selina Meyer's chief of staff. Her performance moved far away from any trace of the sweet girl of the '90s and embraced an exhausting, brilliant professional cynicism.
She earned six consecutive Emmy Award nominations between 2013 and 2019 for this role.
Unlike other former child actors, she didn't need a scandal to reinvent herself. She simply stepped away and came back with solid training on Broadway stages. In 2015, she took part in the play You Can't Take It With You alongside James Earl Jones and showed that her range could sustain physically demanding performances.
In 2022, she played journalist Vivian Kent in the Netflix production Inventing Anna. The series explored the con of Anna Delvey, and Chlumsky carried much of the narrative weight of the investigation. Her character reflected an ambition that directly connected with her own life journey away from the spotlight.
Chlumsky has always preferred characters with rough edges.
Her voice work has also been steady. In 2021, she lent her voice to the animated series Rugrats, playing Charlotte Pickles. This side of her career lets her balance living in New York with projects that don't require long travel or months of location shooting.
For the shoot of her scenes in Inventing Anna in 2022, the production used Sony Venice cameras with Panavision G-Series lenses to achieve that high-budget documentary look.
