Rafi Gavron isn't the typical child prodigy who burns out at twenty. He was born in Hendon, north London, in 1989. His entry into film was the result of a lucky casting twist for Breaking and Entering in 2006. Anthony Minghella was looking for someone with a very specific physical mix, and Gavron, who had no prior acting training at the time, fit the profile for Miro.
He earned a nomination at the British Independent Film Awards right out of the gate.
In 2008, he made his way into the American market with Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, playing Dev, a character that let him step away from British social drama and into New York indie comedy. But the real trial by fire was Inkheart that same year. He worked alongside Brendan Fraser on a blockbuster that didn't quite connect at the box office but gave him global visibility.
His career moves in streaks of steady television work. In 2011, he appeared in several episodes of Parenthood, and shortly after he appeared in The Cold Light of Day alongside Henry Cavill. He doesn't always seek leading roles. He prefers characters with real narrative weight, even when screen time is limited.
And the gamble paid off.
Bradley Cooper cast him in A Star Is Born in 2018. He played Rez Gavron, the relentless manager who sets the film's central conflict in motion. It was a brief but venomous role that put him back on the radar of major studios. For the shoot, he had to work on his accent and a far more aggressive screen presence than he had shown in his previous work.
Prestige television became his main refuge starting in 2019. He took part in the miniseries Catch-22, produced by George Clooney, and joined the cast of Godfather of Harlem that same year. In the latter, he played Ernie Nunzi, a mobster caught in a conflict of loyalties over three consecutive seasons.
In 2022, he joined the cast of The Offer for Paramount+. The series chronicles the production struggles behind The Godfather, and Gavron played Barry Lapidus, an executive who embodied the industry's hardest commercial vision.
His most recent registered work is the film Seven Kings Must Die, directed by 2023.
His contract for the MGM+ series included a territorial exclusivity clause for filming in the New York area.
