Colm Feore is not one of those stars who make the cover of the gossip press. He was born in the United States in 1958, though his career was forged in the cold of Ontario. There he spent 17 seasons in a row at the Stratford Festival in Canada, playing the great classics. Theater gave him the stage experience needed to hold close-ups that intimidate the audience.
In 1993, he starred in Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould. That performance as the eccentric pianist earned him respect from international critics. But his ambitions reached beyond Canadian stages and auteur biopics.
And the world realized he could be a genius.
In the late nineties, Hollywood came calling for roles as men in suits with an icy stare. In 1997, he played Dr. Malcolm Walsh in Face/Off under the direction of John Woo. That was his definitive entry into big-budget films, where supporting actors steal scenes from the stars.
He never sought absolute stardom.
In 2002, he stepped into the shoes of a Nazi war criminal in the TV movie Conspiracy. He shared the screen with Kenneth Branagh and Stanley Tucci in a sharp, cutting acting duel. Because Feore knows a good villain doesn't need to shout to be frightening.
In 2004, he joined the science fiction franchise of Vin Diesel. He played the Lord Marshal in The Chronicles of Riddick, wearing armor that weighed several kilos. The film's production cost $105 million and gave him room to play with the aesthetics of excess.
In 2006, he starred in Bon Cop, Bad Cop, playing an Ontario detective who must work with a colleague from Quebec. The film earned $12 million in the Canadian market.
The figure was an all-time record for Canadian cinema.
But his ability to disappear under makeup reached its limit in 2011. In Thor, he played Laufey, king of the Frost Giants. He spent hours in the makeup chair so no one could recognize his face beneath the blue prosthetics. As a result, his name became synonymous with reliability for casting directors on big franchises.
In 2014, he joined The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Donald Menken. He doesn't care how small the role is as long as the character has a hidden agenda. In 2019, he began his run as Sir Reginald Hargreeves in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. His character is a cold, distant father who adopts children with superpowers to save the world.
Filming for the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy wrapped in 2024. Over those years, he balanced television with more personal projects in Canada. In 2022, he returned to the Stratford stage to play Richard III to unanimous acclaim.
Heavy makeup and three-hour scripts don't scare him.
In 2024, he premiered The Last Front, playing a priest during World War I. Filming took place mainly in locations in Belgium. The film had a budget of 15 million euros to recreate the German invasion of 1914.
