Riley Voelkel had no intention of becoming an actress when a talent scout stopped her at a shopping mall. At the time, she was focused on sports, and her college plans were far from the spotlight of Los Angeles. But the modeling offer became a bridge to her first major audition in 2010.
In 2010, she landed a small role in The Social Network directed by David Fincher. She had no memorable dialogue or excessive moments of glory. Even so, the shoot let her see up close how a top-tier production works under one of the most demanding filmmakers in the industry.
It was a purely logistical decision.
After that experience, she decided to devote herself to acting training and leave the runway behind. In 2012, she got her chance on prestige television with The Newsroom. Aaron Sorkin cast her as Jenna Johnson, an intern who ends up playing an important emotional role in the newsroom.
The fast pace of Sorkin's scripts was relentless and demanded absolute verbal precision. Riley Voelkel rose to the challenge over the show's three seasons. But the wider audience didn't truly discover her until 2014, when she joined the cast of The Originals on The CW.
She broke into TV playing Freya Mikaelson under an initial contract for just three episodes. The writers wanted a figure who would bring mystery to the mythology of the original vampire family. Audiences responded so positively that the character became a series regular until the show ended in 2018.
The risk was worth it.
During those years, she learned to handle the physical demands of fantasy productions. In 2019, she returned to the same role in several episodes of Legacies to close her character's storyline for fans of the franchise. That period gave her the financial stability she needed to start choosing projects with a much darker, more adult tone.
In 2019, she accepted the role of Jenna Cameron in Roswell, New Mexico. It was a job she balanced with other productions while looking for a change of pace that would move her away from a teen audience.
Her real break from her previous image came in 2020 with the premiere of Hightown on Starz. In this series, she played Renee Segna, a nightclub dancer caught in a web of drug trafficking and toxic relationships on Cape Cod. The role demanded a rawness she had not shown in her previous work on broadcast television.
She kept the character for three seasons until the production wrapped in 2024. It was a tough shoot because of the locations and the dramatic weight of the violent scenes. But this project let her work with producers such as Jerry Bruckheimer and earn respect in American crime drama circles.
In 2022, she joined the series Chicago Med playing Milena Jovanovic. She was a character with a double life as an undercover police officer, and her time on the show ended after a high-impact physical storyline. Her stint in Dick Wolf's franchise was brief but intense.
In 2024, the Chicago Med production confirmed her return for season nine under a recurring contract to play Jacki Nelson. The filming of these technical episodes took place at the Cinespace studios in Chicago under strict union protocols.
